This is my final summer in the Mediterranean, my body cannot handle this heat anymore. Anytime it's windy in the summer I'm terrified the fires will come. And they do. Greece is burning today, too.

The heat has been oppressive, a constant strain. It sucks the life out of the land and the mind, it plays tricks upon me. The scorched fields and meadows aren’t speaking and the longing for the rain is intense. It will pass, I know it will, but at the moment I know not when.

Church porch as excommunicate outreach. Church porch as corpse pause, corpse watch. Church porch as threshold, as site of loosing and binding. Half-consecrated, beyond the blessing of water, wine, salt and ash. Neither in nor out and therefore a place of magics. – #CLNolan

And you, Wegbrade, greatest of herbs, open from the east, mighty within. Over you carts creaked, over you queens rode, over you brides passed, over you bulls snorted. You withstood them all and resisted them; so may you withstand poison and infection, and the evil that travels through the land.
A clump of common plantain (Plantago major) growing beside a dry, sun-bleached path. Its broad, dark green leaves spread low in a rosette, while several tall, slender seed spikes rise above the foliage. Fallen leaves and parched summer grass surround the plant, highlighting its resilience as it thrives in the trampled ground.

Sometimes turning to strangers for validation and comfort is all we have. I admire those that do, because sometimes people are surrounded by people but are just lost in the crowd. Be kind to our tribe, love them and give them the support they need, even if we don’t know they need it.

The cunning folk called borage the flower that remembers courage. They say if you tucked a blue bloom into your pocket before crossing lonely fields, the shadows would keep their distance. No spirit cares to trouble a heart that has remembered its own bravery.

The elder hangs her dark beads in July. The cunning folk say she’s counted the warm days herself and dressed for autumn before the rest of the hedgerow believed it. Never take the first berry you see. Leave it for the old spirits, lest they remember your name when winter comes. #Folklore
Close-up photograph of ripe elderberries hanging in a summer hedgerow. Clusters of glossy black berries dangle from vivid crimson stems, framed by dense green leaves with a few sun-dried brown leaves tucked among them. The berries are heavy and abundant, catching the light against the lush foliage, evoking the height of the English summer before the first signs of autumn.

As a child I was convinced three things would get me: quicksand, spontaneous human combustion, and something I once read about called Walking Corpse Syndrome. None of them ever did. Still… I can’t say I’ve entirely stopped worrying that there is a chance that one of them is still coming for me.

"A conversation conducted at those intervals is not a conversation. It is an exchange of monuments." — S. Ferranti, private journal, 11.07.1892
If Whewell is wrong, and there is somebody there, on Mars say, our nearest interesting neighbour, where Schiaparelli some years back reported markings he called "canali", then the difficulty is not whether we could ever signal them. Herr Hertz's waves, or something built upon them, will cross that gulf eventually; open space offers no more resistance to a wave than the aether between here and any detector he may set up. The difficulty is this: whatever we send will arrive a very great time after we have sent it, and whatever comes back will arrive a very great time after that. A conversation conducted at those intervals is not a conversation. It is an exchange of monuments.

"He proved the thing has a speed at all, finite and fixed." — S. Ferranti, private journal, 14.01.1893
Deptford again, and a small triumph today with the alternator windings, which I shall not spoil these pages with the detail of. But I notice a pattern in my own mind now that I did not have three years ago. I no longer think of distance in miles of cable. I think of it in the time light takes to cross it. Rømer worked this speed out two centuries back from nothing more than watching Jupiter's moons keep imperfect time: a beautifully simple piece of reasoning, and I find I return to it more than to anything written since. He proved the thing has a speed at all, finite and fixed. Everyone since has merely found fresh, and less convenient, ways of proving me right.

There are those who swear a place can remember footsteps. I reckon minds do too. The old thoughts never truly leave; they linger as cognitive ghosts, wandering the familiar lanes of memory, rattling old gates, whispering in voices we mistake for our own. Best not answer every knock. #Hookland

"He is, I think, something more useful than that: a man who finishes what men of imagination begin, and does not much mind that they receive the praise for it." — S. Ferranti, private journal, 16.05.1892
Dined at the Institution of Electrical Engineers last evening and found myself seated beside Byng, of the General Electric Company; a chance arrangement, or so the seating card would have me believe, though I have my doubts that anything at these dinners is quite so unplanned. We spoke for above an hour, mostly of trade: the price of copper, the difficulty of finding men who can be trusted with high-tension work, the tiresome business of persuading municipal councils that alternating current will not electrocute their ratepayers in their beds. He struck me as a man entirely without vanity about his own cleverness, which is rare enough in this profession to be worth remarking on. GEC was a small wholesale concern not ten years past; it is not small now, and Byng talks about the growing of it the way another man might talk about the raising of a good wall: brick, mortar, patience, and no romance whatsoever. I confess I rather (page 1 of 2)admire it. I am too fond of the romance myself. Byng is not a visionary, and would likely take it as an insult if I called him one. He is, I think, something more useful than that: a man who finishes what men of imagination begin, and does not much mind that they receive the praise for it. (page 2 of 2)

"Is there anybody out there to signal to at all? I notice I want it answered rather badly." — S. Ferranti, private journal, 03.02.1892
Whewell's old book has come back into my hands by way of a colleague's shelf: "Of the Plurality of Worlds", now the best part of forty years old. He argued against the crowd of his own day, holding that intelligent life, perhaps any life answerable to reason, might be a singular thing, confined to this one small planet, and that the abundance of worlds proves nothing about the abundance of minds to inhabit them. I found myself irritated by him on the first reading, and unable to dismiss him on the second. He was arguing theology as much as science, and not well suited to either camp as a result. But the underlying question remains: is there anybody out there to signal to at all? I notice I want it answered rather badly.

A hush in high summer, usually in the late afternoon, when even the crows forget what they were saying. That is when the first scent of autumn slips through the hedgerows — a little dry leaf, a little old woodsmoke... The cunning folk say that is the land breathing in before it begans to let go.

During the 17thC, there were winters so cold that frost fairs were held on the River Thames. Here you can see a fair held in the winter of 1683/4. It's worth zooming in to see all the details. Maybe this thread gives you some cooler thoughts. #WyrdWednesday
An early modern broadsheet called Great Britains wonder: or, Londons Admiration. Being a true representation of a prodigious frost, which began about the beginning of Decemb. 1683. and continued till the fourth day of February following. And held on with such violence, that men and beasts, coaches and carts, went as frequently thereon, as boats were wont to pass before. There was also a street of booths built from the Temple to Southwark, where were sold all sorts of goods imaginable, [...] It being the wonder of this present age, and a great consternation to all the spectators. Beneath the title is an illustration in black and white of a frost fair on the Thames in London. You can see merchant's booths in the middle and next to them you can see people at various activities and games. There's also animal baiting. Coaches are drawn across the ice and people even draw a boat across the ice. In the background, you can see The Temple and buildings adjacent.
