@georgeaye.bsky.social opening #sdingov is exactly what I needed this morning 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ "The cost of speaking up is high. The cost of not speaking up is higher."
George in front of a slide that says:

Four Social Contracts

Epstein Class
White Americans
People of Color
Black Americans

When you are in need, you are offered a conditional promise.
Perform the right values. Achieve the right credentials.
Don't make demands as a group.
Don't seek solidarity with other groups.
The contract may honor you, but the terms can be changed when you no longer prove useful.

I’m often asked for examples of good ‘working in the open’ - so I’ve made a list of some of my favourites, and I’ll do my best to keep it updated as I hear about new ones. It’s called “Doing open” gilest.org/doingopen/

Nice to see such shifts. When designers get closer to the medium their work lives in, the whole process gets clearer for everyone involved. Training and support are key to making this real. Kudos @frankieroberto.com and team.

Foucault sees power as a decentralised, dynamic process embedded in social relationships. I see it as crucial for the well-being of nodes in a system to avoid consolidating power, as it disrupts both the circulation within the network and the internal flow of the node itself, harming both sides.
Power must be analyzed as something which circulates, or rather as something which only functions in the form of a chain. It is never localized here or there, never in anybody's hands, never appropriated as a commodity or piece of wealth.

Power is employed and exercised through a net-like organization. And not only do individuals circulate between its threads; they are always in the position of simultaneously undergoing and exercising this power. They are not only its inert and consenting target; they are always also the elements of its articulation. In other words, individuals are the vehicles of power, not its points of application.

... One needs to investigate historically, and beginning from the lowest level, how mechanisms of power have been able to function.

- Michel Foucault

An interesting paper exploring the architecture of Open Banking, Open Finance, and Open Data. The consent-driven ecosystem is radical, with consent at its core, giving power back to users – DPI thinking in play. It also touches on interoperability, cryptographic safeguards, and auditability.

The paper shows how easily LLM-powered robots can be jailbroken, overriding safety protocols. It even ignores basic sanitisation. Edge case testing in an inherently probabilistic environment is both too late and too narrow. Ethics must be foundational—not a patch post-deployment.

Shifting from standard to probabilistic distributions will bring more uncertainty and chaos to users. This will be a challenge as systemic-algo models become more vague, potentially perpetuating systemic discrimination and blind spots. UCD practice should remain at the core.

Every user interaction is processed by their nervous system, activating a sympathetic or parasympathetic response. For me, inclusive design practice means be open, humble, empathy and continuously aware of own blind spots. Context and lived experience are key to design mindful, adaptive interfaces.

Recently finding myself doing more collective inquiry with teams — leading by curiosity. It’s been deeply healing to create such space for everyone to be authentic and explore complexity together, without needing everything ‘figured out.’ Alternating retros and CI is working, it’s a fine balance.

A thought-provoking review of a brilliant book. Perhaps an approach might be to identify commonality in demand-side problem sets to gain real use-case leverage for developing open, reusable standards and protocols that support the evolving network topology — it begins to drive equitable outcomes.

2/ reflecting on the evolution of DS, I wonder if a "starter kit" or boilerplate could help departments and local gov get started without needing to begin from scratch. Perhaps with provisions for layout, accessibility, responsiveness, and metadata standards to empower teams with low dependency.

1/ noticed components with the same functionality but different naming conventions (e.g. language toggle). Does this highlight a need for better interoperability, cross-gov consistency, perhaps standardised tags/metadata for reusability and findability? #DesignSystems

6/ Most design system components link to sub-pages, while a few link directly to GitHub, using the main site as a 'front door.' I thought this was a clever, low-code approach, especially as things are still evolving.
