New: Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin have reached a deal to abolish NYC's horse carriage industry — a critical breakthrough in a decadeslong, politically fraught effort to ban the tourist attraction. www.politico.com/news/2026/10...

Mamdani and City Council strike deal to ban NYC horse carriage industry
The deal marks a major breakthrough in a long-running effort to outlaw the industry. It is also likely to inflame Mamdani’s relationship with a powerful local union.

Reporters: DO NOT DO THIS. Pitting a random guy versus an entire body of scholarly research. And then highlighting the non-expert's pure conjecture as the lede. This is like interviewing a Reddit anti-vaxxer with the qualification that doctors are "dubious." #bothsidesism
Some economic and policy analysts who study stadium deals are dubious about these types of funding plans, often arguing that existing spending is merely shifted around from one area to another and that the economic benefits do not justify public costs. Given the prominence of professional sports, Grunauer sees the stadium project being an “important catalyst” for the urban core. As the neighborhood works on issues and has seen progress, he sees much of them as downstream of economic activity and notes aligned interests with the Royals. “They want to protect their investment and want to have a safe, nice, attractive neighborhood to protect their investment,” he said. “That’s what we as business owners also want too, and residents.” Royals stadium as catalyst Grunauer sees the potential for the Royals project as a tool to spark more development in the area, including projects that may have been on the back burner, which would bring even more people, more businesses, more pedestrian activity, more workers and more activity into the neighborhood.

The rule cuts back the number of scenarios under which you can get help, such as "unscheduled maintenance, including in response to an airworthiness directive...that cannot be deferred or must be addressed before flight." So if your plane isn't airworthy, it's not the airlines' fault now.

Political violence is a serious issue. But it’s not a “both sides” issue. The leaders of the Democratic Party do not call for violence, do not elevate violent supporters, do not pardon violent thugs who attack our seat of government and our elections. America is under threat from the right.

It is a hell of a lot easier to do a general strike and shut a country down if you have guaranteed health care whether or not you have a job or can afford it. I think one reason they deny Medicare for All so much is that the GOP knows fear of loss of health care keeps people from rising up.

This afternoon in Marble Hill, a New Yorker was shot by an ICE agent in a residential neighborhood. Early reports indicate agents surrounded him and a 5-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds. We believe the child was physically unharmed.

This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation. I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities.

Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery.

Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children.

Abolish ICE.

So, historically, men have used the privilege afforded to them by patriarchy to push the "unprofitable" work of care onto women, making it easier for them to hoard the more profitable (and thus higher-status) work for themselves. And companies encouraged this, because it meant more profits for them.
