imo there should be a safe word or like… the operation! buzzer goes off where if you start talking in too much detail about oh, i don’t know, the complex realities of living with comorbid chronic conditions you get a warning to change course before you start racking up additional charges

i have my annual physical, which is a fun game of how do i discuss my body beyond a static moment in time without triggering additional charges from my insurance, becuase preventative care DOES NOT include preventing worsening of your existing conditions !!!!!!

Texas screwworm cases doubled in just two weeks. The greedy few cut corners, dragged their feet, and left Texas ranchers, pets, wildlife, and families exposed. We beat the screwworm before, and if we use every proven tool available, we can beat it again.
Graphic featuring a close-up USDA photo of a New World screwworm fly perched on a green leaf. Large white text at the top reads, “Texas screwworm cases double in two weeks as USDA reports 32 infections.” Small text in the lower left credits the photo to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and a Statesman “S” logo appears in the lower right corner.

Didn't make it to the store today- please help me raise enough to go in the wee hours of the night? Trying to go before real heat waves hit- when even at 3AM it's too hot for me. At $45 of $150, and also need to start on Sunday rent. Please consider chipping in? And please keep sharing!

And I’m sorry but our human comprehension model just fucking breaks down in the face of so much feedback. Thundering applause can unhinge the most hinged person. This is how the bots get politicians and pundits to dance like marionettes. They make you think you have a crowd behind you.

Because even when there’s a crowd online speaking truth, there’s always another crowd there applauding and demanding more. And there are dark political orgs cranking out fake responders, both bots and real people role playing, to encourage exactly this.

It’s not just being terminally online, it’s being surrounded by an always-on audience (that may be mostly bots and fakers) that keeps applauding increasingly deranged behavior. A room full of applause is an incredibly addictive intoxicant, even when it’s digital and mostly fake.

Le Guin on the idea that there is a secret to getting good at writing.
I will dispose of the first myth as quickly as possible. The “secret” is skill. If you haven’t learned how to do something, the people who have may seem to be magicians, possessors of mysterious secrets. In a fairly simple art, such as making pie crust, there are certain teachable “secrets” of method that lead almost infallibly to good results; but in any complex art, such as housekeeping, piano-playing, clothes-making, or story-writing, there are so many techniques, skills, choices of method, so many variables, so many “secrets,” some teachable and some not, that you can learn them only by methodical, repeated, long-continued practice — in other words, by work.

this reminds me of bills that “increase the penalty for offenses committed while wearing a mask” that were very big in multiple states after students masked up to protest for Palestinian liberation. the goal was to presume criminality of protesters and many different bills seek to create such labels

group therapy idea: doom scrolling. now, i rack up the screen time, but i haven’t been so in the room recently so i need to reflect and research what would be supportive in such a group. the goal is to process what you’re seeing, not lower screen time (unless an individual wants to)

what saddens me most about this current political moment is how few people have the skills, time, and energy to really step back and ask if their current actions are aligned with their values. so many folks tell me one thing and do the other and they’re too overwhelmed to see it.

grief is political in a society that dehumanizes its citizens and actively works to desensitize us to death and loss. no, grief is not simply a political statement, but listening/tending to such emotions can bring us deeper into our personal values (which often inform our political values).

i want to know why our daily lives/routines and our healthcare policies do NOT revolve around the needs of those who need the most caregiving and support. bc when you center disabled & aging folks and babies, you create a net that can catch every need if woven at the bequest of these communities.

i work with and study death/grief (and disability) a lot. so sometimes my mind just goes to drafting eulogies for people i love while i’m in the shower, cleaning, walking, etc. thankful it’s not intrusive, but a welcome anticipatory grief that helps me stay present bc i know it won’t last forever

EDIT: I understand the visuals at the end are having technical difficulties—since this was kind of a soft launch anyway, I'll be re-uploading likely Monday, but will leave it up for the moment since the audio seems to be working. in the mean time, please enjoy my attempts at ragebait thumbnails:
a very goofy photoshopped thumbnail for my youtube video about hillsdale college. it reads "ERIKA KIRK SPEAKS AT ANTI-WOKE UNIVERSITY???" in large sans serif text. A multilayered blurry image of hillsdale's facade acts as the very back layer, with Erika Kirk in her academic regalia and me, in loungewear holding Anne Nelson's "SHADOW NETWORK" in opposing corners.a very goofy photoshopped thumbnail for my youtube video about hillsdale college. it reads "WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH THE COLLEGE WHERE ERIKA KIRK SPOKE?" in large sans serif text. The imagery is multilayered and a bit goofy: the bottom image is of my LilSis mapping of the Council for National Policy. Just on top is Patrick (from Spongebob) coming home with an ice cream and groceries to see poorly photoshopped images of CNP members heads underneath his rock ("who are you people???" echoes in our collective psyche).
