Integrating compositional and quantitative microbiome parameters could therefore provide a framework to study microbiome organization and function, which should be explored to identify new diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets for microbiome-mediated diseases.

Our findings suggest that gut homeostasis and #dysbiosis may be characterized or even controlled by QMP changes that may be more consistent across different diseases and interventions than compositional fecal microbiota profiles.

Yet HFiD and TRF mice shared no similarities in fecal taxonomic microbiota compositions. Here, variations were instead explained by classic ecological and technical confounders of microbiome studies, such as cage, litter effects.

W. Florian Fricke @wffricke.bsky.social · 08/07/2026
Food intake (fasting) and GI transit, which was faster on HFiD or TRF and slower on HFaD, acted as separate QMP modulators. Interestingly, HFiD and TRF induced surprisingly similar reductions of QMPs and intestinal expression of inflammatory markers, which contrasted those of HFaD mice.

We measured GI transit time, stool production (fecal mass), bacterial density (load) and proliferation (microbiota excretion) in response to diet (high-fat [HFaD] vs. #high-fiber diet [HFiD]) and feeding (fasting and time-restricted feeding [TRF] / #intervalfasting) in mice.

Is it not just “good” and “bad” bacteria but their absolute abundance, i.e, quantitative microbiome parameters (QMPs) that control the #microbiome’s effect on the host? Check out our new paper in @cp-cellreports.bsky.social: www.cell.com/cell-reports...

Maternal strain transfer to C-section infants appears to be delayed but not eliminated, as infants at age 2-10y share similar strain numbers with their mothers and fathers as vaginally delivered infants. (4/4)

Interestingly, reduced gut microbiota rhythmicity and compositional changes preceded colitis symptoms in IL-10-/- mice, allowing us to train a PLS-DA model to predict colitis onset for individual mice from one experiment, which performed well on mice from a different experiment. (6/x)

W. Florian Fricke @wffricke.bsky.social · 24/01/2025
Yet time-restricted feeding (TRF) had positive effects on IL-10-/- mice: It delayed colitis onset, reduced intestinal inflammation, improved the intestinal clock and increased gut microbiota rhythmicity - of the same taxa and to the same level as in wt mice. (5/x)

W. Florian Fricke @wffricke.bsky.social · 24/01/2025
We found that while altered light/dark conditions disrupted the intestinal clock of wt mice, the intestinal clock and gut microbiota rhythmicity of IL-10-/- mice were impaired irrespective of external clock disruption, possibly due to dysbiosis even before the onset of colitis. (4/x)
