For the love of all that is holy can we pretty please de-amalgamate and let the idiots in the suburbs and rurals deal with this and pay for it with their own tax dollars. I live in a city. A lot of folks who live in what’s currently considered my city actually do not. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

When the community rallies, we achieve meaningful change together. The Gladstone-Gilmour Bikeway will get the trucks off of Gladstone and offer a new protected east-west route through downtown Ottawa. I am so proud of this major victory for safe cycling in Somerset Ward. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

I just don't want other people projecting their anxieties about cycling on to me. I constantly (and obnoxiously) get told by non-cyclists to wear a helmet. I wish they'd just let me make my own decisions based on my own risk tolerance. I'm not putting anyone else in danger by not wearing a helmet.

Investing more in rural Ottawa is the opposite of fair. It takes away from the people that actually generate that money and have needs.

I agree 100% there needs to be fiscal responsibility. Which is why we can't afford to spend 100s of millions of car infrastructure in the suburbs, nor can we afford to expand suburbs. Not without raising taxes. Genuinely curious, in your view, how has the city been fiscally irresponsible?

Either that, or de-amalgamate and let the areas outside the greenbelt see the real price tag of road widenings a and other car dependent living.

weyoun7.bsky.social @weyoun7.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
Taxes need to be raised. Urban areas generate most of the wealth but rural and suburban areas expect the same level of services without being able to pay for it. This is not sustainable with low taxes.

I wonder if lack of awareness is also a major problem? Anecdotal, but hardly anyone I've talked to in my circle even knows there's a municipal election. They probably don't even know which ward they're in, who's their councillor and what issues are under municipal purview.

For those at home keeping score, over the course of the past *three days*, a driver crashed into a bank, an impaired driver drove into a Beer Store, a driver hit a pedestrian, and a driver hit a cyclist and almost crashed into the canal.

This is because most people in Ottawa are either unaware or apathetic about municipal governance. Ask a random resident which ward their in or who's their councillor and you'll probably get a blank stare. They'll happily complain about traffic (which they are a part of) though...

It is utterly insane that trucks carrying loads like these need to be routed through the urban core to get to the interprovincial bridge.
Two trucks carrying large logs on a city street with tall apartment buildings in the background.

An amazing member of ours put together this graphic that really encapsulates perfectly the situation on Bank Street. There is only so much space available, and we must use it as efficiently as possible. Parking isn't that. Please sign up to delegate on March 30th in favour of bus lanes!
An OC Transpo #6 bus in a bus lane. Inside of the bus there are multiple people, each with a text showing what they're going to be doing. They say "Grabbing a bite to eat", "Going to Lansdowne", "Getting a haircut", "Bought groceries", and "Can finally fit on the bus". The final one was a user in a wheelchair.

Beside the bus there is a single person in a truck in the regular travel lane. Pointing to him it says "Just driving through". They have a thought bubble coming out from their head saying "That bus lane is going to ruin local business!".

100% agree. That said, 50% of ottawa lives on 13% of the land (inside greenbelt) generating 50% of tax revenue for city; has the oldest infrastructure and greater social challenges; when will we see an urban summit? When will urban residents be prioritized for services and investment?

Awesome! Raising $375K at a gala to address youth homelessness is great. Of course, that's a fraction of what's needed to address the issue long-term. One way to double that amount would be an additional tax increase of 0.01875%, or $1.13 more per year for the average taxpayer. Food for thought!

For a better future, build transit & price driving!

Saw this comment on a headphone review. People have zero awareness of the fact that driving a car (with the windows up, potentially music playing) substantially reduces your auditory awareness of the outside world too. Because that’s just considered normal.

This. The cohort of 16-9 votes at council win, and claim victory and try to convince us that they’re doing the right thing and yet year after year, we see the same issues: chronic underfunding of social infrastructure while $ bleeds out to unsustainable suburban/rural wards.

Councillor Tim Tierney is wrong about ‘Chronic No-Voters’ in his Ottawa Citizen Op/Ed on Saturday. His opinion would be easier to take seriously if the comments weren’t coming from someone with a 15-year track record of being a reliable yes-man for every budget. 1/21
