I ended up in this weird place on FB's algorithm where it's showing me a ton of RW slop farm stuff, no matter how much I block, so if it's that bad for me, who curates his algorithm, I can only imagine how bad it is for accounts like my parents.

I'm more curious about BookFace, Xitter, etc. I would expect to see a similar pattern for a bunch of accounts that normally post almost constantly going silent, but it's probably harder to access data for analysis on that.

Genuinely curious if this will show up as a visible drop off in activity for swaths of social media content farms and suspected inauthentic users to quantify how much of the right wing agitprop is originating there

I dislike being earnest, but the only answer I know of to the onslaught of dystopian and apocalyptic news is love. Foster a dog, plant some flowers, call up a friend you haven’t talked to in too long, try to be kind. This isn’t easy, it’s difficult—that’s the message of every religion I’m aware of.

Debian upgraded rsync (3.4.1) > In order to fix 33 CVEs, I have decided to bump the package to 3.5.0 rather than backporting all patches individually. After analysing the extra changes from the bump [...] I have concluded this approach carries the lower amount of risk compared to the alternative.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

I thought that might be it, and checked there first, but the voices everywhere else I checked sounded normal. this was a setting and voice specific to Maps, which I've never changed before.

I am far more annoyed that they changed the default without permission, and because it's Google's SOP as 19 companies in a trenchcoat it's one of I think 3 or 4 different places there is an option to pick a voice instead of a common, integrated setting.

I am generally not bothered by the presence of vocal fry but it's polarizing and definitely doesn't carry well in the background noise of a car. I also wonder about the psychology underlying that choice.

Google randomly changed the default US English female voice that gets used for Maps navigation announcements and it's pitched noticeably lower in general, but it also uses a *ton* of vocal fry, which strikes me as a very weird choice.

Meta is king of dark pattern UI to make it easy to over-permit while giving the appearance of control. They're forever moving settings, especially privacy ones around in the app to make it harder for people to follow guides to properly disable all their opted in by default creepy stuff.

the payback point on swapping oil for heat pump might be 1 heating season, esp if it's a forced air system. I swapped the AC for heat pump at my last house, kept oil backup for low temps (hybrid heat). With modern cold weather heat pumps, that would mean weather in the low teens instead of the 30s.

This is especially bad if the two options for where to enter the toll lanes require taking a significantly different route to reach them such that you're committed to one or the other well before you can see the cost of the tolls. 3/

Wes George @wesgeorge.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
It doesn't show the cost of the tolls, meaning that you can't make a decision to take an alternate route because it's not worth $30 to save 5 min, or choose a different place to enter the toll lanes to get lower tolls but still save time. 2/

Wes George @wesgeorge.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
The prices are posted on signs near the entrances, and there's a website where you can put your entry/exit point in and it'll estimate tolls. Gmaps can avoid tolls and show you alternate routes with data on whether it's faster/slower, more/less traffic, and tolls/no tolls but 2/
