Debian upgraded rsync (3.4.1) > In order to fix 33 CVEs, I have decided to bump the package to 3.5.0 rather than backporting all patches individually. After analysing the extra changes from the bump [...] I have concluded this approach carries the lower amount of risk compared to the alternative.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

Google randomly changed the default US English female voice that gets used for Maps navigation announcements and it's pitched noticeably lower in general, but it also uses a *ton* of vocal fry, which strikes me as a very weird choice.

the payback point on swapping oil for heat pump might be 1 heating season, esp if it's a forced air system. I swapped the AC for heat pump at my last house, kept oil backup for low temps (hybrid heat). With modern cold weather heat pumps, that would mean weather in the low teens instead of the 30s.

I'm not sure if it's something with the compound they use for reduced rolling resistance or what but I have now had the same problem with 2 different cars & tire brands where the EV-specific tires get dangerously greasy in the rain as they wear out.

You know, honestly, more than monetary donations, if somebody worked at a company that had access to a lot of 18 terabyte and larger hard drives and could talk to us, that's where we are really suffering. The internet archive has no special priority in buying hard drives and those things are insane.

Was curious about what NASA stuff the Internet Archive might have and came across this gorgeous bit of cassette/diskette futurism: wind tunnel software and hardware at the Lewis Research Centre. The worm logo is so fitting for that kind of display. <3
A photo dated 1989 of two guys in comfy plaid check shirts at a pair of crt monitors (black frame with white casing), one pressing buttons on a slanted keyboard that has a bit of a retro feel even for 1989 while the other sports a headset and holding a black box. Vibrant and share schematics of a wind tunnel can be seen on one screen while a blue background with the red NASA worm logo is displayed on the other.

The same young lady with goth makeup, a black Victorian-style dress, and dark hair: the classic 'goth look'. The original image is labeled "goth", while another one has been composited on with a high-vis yellow work vest like those used on construction sites, and below it it says "Visigoth".
