I wrote an essay for young graduates (the places you’ll go etc) but because it’s my newsletter I can also talk about whatever I want, such as this cool painting I found. mattdpearce.substack.com/p/to-the-you...
This painting shows a man seated with one knee bent, his body turned to the right and his face turned slightly back toward us. He has brown skin, high cheekbones, a short, curly black beard, and short black hair. His facial expression is neutral, and he is gazing off into the distance, his brown eyes turned slightly upwards. The man is wearing a cream-colored shirt with short sleeves, red and white striped shorts that end above his knees, and a yellow sash around his waist. His hands are clasped together on his bent knee, the other leg hanging downwards. The background is a solid light blue color with visible brushstrokes, and the man appears to sit on a red object in the bottom left corner, with a piece of blue fabric hanging off of it or in front of it.I think, for example, about Pierre Louis Alexandre. Alexandre was likely born into slavery in 19th century French Guiana and escaped to freedom in Stockholm, where he worked as a stevedore on the docks and, when it got too cold in the Swedish winters, sat for portraits for the local art students. One of those students was Karin Bergöö, who would soon have to abandon her aspirations as a painter when she got married. The portrait she produced, of an artist and a subject each outside the mainstream, was a student masterwork.
Bergöö's humane portrait of Alexandre survived the prejudices of its time to take up residence in our own. That kind of power could belong to any one of you. No one expects it; no one controls it.

The reactions of some researchers on Twitter finally being held responsible for not having read the very paper they submitted are... something. Mainly, they don't think they should have to check every citation or make sure the data is real and accurate. Because it's too hard, I guess.

📣 The difference between replicable and not replicable is not itself scientifically replicable. 📣 New work with Erkan Buzbas, showing that verdicts such as "X% of results replicated" are based on an inferential machinery that doesn't work. arxiv.org/abs/2604.26268
Screenshot of a paper's title page. Title: "The Difference Between 'Replicable' and 'Not replicable' is not Itself Scientifically Replicable". Authors: Berna Devezer and Erkan O. Abstract: Replication studies estimate the replicability rate of scientific results by aggregating binary verdicts of experiments. Exact replications are rarely attainable, so most replication sequences are non-exact. Experiments differ in ways that matter and do not share a single common data-generating process. We formalize two statistical interpretations of this non-exactness. In a shared latent rate model (benchmark), experiments are exchangeable and depend on a common random replicability rate. In a conditionally independent rates model (operational), each experiment has its own replicability rate drawn independently from a population distribution. Under the shared latent rate model, even small variability among replicability rates induces an irreducible variance floor on the estimated mean replicability rate that cannot be eliminated by adding more replications. Under the conditionally independent rates model, the degree of non-exactness is not identifiable from standard replication data, because one binary verdict per experiment contains no information about between-experiment heterogeneity. Researchers therefore cannot tell which precision regime they are operating in or whether high- and low-replicability sequences can be distinguished in principle. As a result, the usual data structure of one binary verdict per experiment cannot support reliable demarcation between "replicable" and "not replicable" results and systematically understates uncertainty, making high- and low-replicability sequences appear discrim…
