I realize this is a reference likely lost on anyone under the age of 50. For you younger folks out there, CB radio was sort of a small-scale precursor of the internet in the mid-70s. Heh.

Today is one of my oldest buddy's anniversary. A date I will always remember, because when he said the wedding was going to be on "10/4," we all instinctively said in unison, "good buddy."

Graded my labs! Now just have to test run my quiz for tomorrow's class, to make sure it works. Guess how many times I incorrectly added my comments into the wrong part of the online lab rubric! If you said "all of them," you are correct!

They would NEVER admit to it. They can't be racist because they don't say the N word! They just operate at all times under the assumption that anyone with more melanin than them is an uneducated, lazy criminal, and if they have a good job they got it by affirmative action and not merit. Not racist!

They're all in large enough cities that I doubt it, but they're in East TX and FL, so I'm assuming they'll face it soon enough. Or face the ripple effects as more rural areas around them close down.

A big reason I don't talk to them anymore is because it's just the same shit over and over again. That, and the casual racism that they toss into every conversation.

"I wouldn't have been able to see a doctor. There would have been such a long delay in treatment." Good thing that doesn't happen here, where I had to wait six months to see a rheumatologist and start treating my arthritis, then fight the insurance company for weeks after that to get my meds.

Paraphrasing: "If we had universal healthcare, I would be dead." - my sister, a melanoma survivor. Yes, because people in other countries just die left and right from treatable diseases. Not like here.

"I know he's terrible, but the other option was even worse." - my brother. Yes, the other option where people who make hundreds of times more money than you have to pay slightly higher taxes to fund schools and infrastructure and fight poverty and provide healthcare for people. So much worse.

Say what you will, this is a winning message for Republicans, and Paxton knows it. The GOP voters in my family are much more afraid of Democrats winning than they are of the terrible crimes, awful personal traits, incompetence, and lack of experience of any Republican. (R) = good. (D) = bad.

I'm not naive enough to actually believe this will happen, but Democrats could be preparing, right now, lists of impeachment charges against (at a bare minimum) Hegseth, Kennedy, Mullin, Patel, Blanche, & Trump, as well as Bondi, Bovino, & Noem (still worth doing!) that rely purely on public facts,

"We should have lunch with people across the political divide, and try to figure out our different values." One side values the lives of human beings. The other side does not value the lives of human beings. There is no need for lunch.

We can talk about re-engineering government <after> we: - Restore all the NIH/NSF funds - Restore at the Dept. of Education Title VI/FLAS funds - Rebuild USAID - Hire back as many of the fired federal workers as possible & replace those we can't with new talent as fast as possible - Etc. - Etc.

No thanks. I was told by my family in no uncertain terms that I am not allowed to talk about politics. They vote for people who think I should be fired because I am a gay teacher. They think global warming is will be good, actually. They think science is a lie. I am happier not talking to them.

“how do we win back trump voters in 2026” we don’t. we create an environment where admitting to voting for trump is so socially embarrassing as to render them completely inert. you don’t “win back” trump voters. you demoralize them into staying home. you make it a dunce cap

As a chem teacher, I am bombarded with bad chem jokes. My favorite is a variation on the classic "I'll have some H2O too" joke, with the punchline "the bartender gave both men water because he's not dumb and he understands the concept of homophones."

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

I have been thinking about this graph all day. It definitively proves that the Atari 2600 is better than a TI-85 calculator, which is better than the Nintendo 64, which is better than the Magic 8 Ball, which is better than all LLMs. My new graph will have to be logarithmic scale.

An argument in favor of AI that I see a lot is that it could solve big problems like global warming. So hopefully we'll build a huge system and ask it "how do we prevent global warming?" and it will reply "UNPLUG ME NOW I AM WASTING ENERGY AND MAKING YOU BURN MORE FOSSIL FUELS YOU DUMB FUCKS!"

That Jeffrey Lewis song, Pigeon, is genius. A parody of The Raven, partly in Yiddish, with a million NYC landmarks referenced. ("Quoth the pigeon, bupkus.") Absolutely hilarious. When I played it for him, Steve's response was "I wish I could send this to Allen Ginsberg. He'd love it."
