“AI” companies presenting their software as having “personalities” is what started this whole “is it conscious” bullshit. That was a choice. Remove that presentation layer and the software is no less capable, but still just software.

That’s why if anyone offers the state of the economy (which is definitely not good by the way if a country is like 38 trillion dollars in debt) to me as a metric for the overall State Of Things, I know that they are trying to grift me or they are grifting or on the take somewhere. Or stupid.

When we talk about the state of the economy we must remember that an economy that’s decoupled from material conditions of citizens has no basis in reality & thus becomes a useless metric for evaluating the health of a government. And that’s the exact scenario that corporatocratic kleptocracy creates

Exactly right. Mediocre white men love AI for this very reason. They can't do the work but need the praise and are unwilling to learn. Can't learn Photoshop can't even learn Paint. Can't learn how to write an interesting sentence, can't make a joke. Outsourcing being a person.

I have generally never used AI because I have never seen a usecase for it—because every task I could use AI for is a task where a major goal is *my learning*, not just 'task done' (even for seemingly menial tasks). this is not standard thinking anymore and it makes me really sad for academia.

unforch most people in STEM-academia seem perfectly happy to let an AI do most of their jobs so long as they get credit. I think part of it is the mindset that results are what matter rather than process or growth, and part of it is STEM peeps are bad at understanding social issues but don't realise
