Just got a reply-all email at work to an "unsubscribe me" sent to the entire group to say "how to unsubscribe" (CAPS were involved in both). I was going to send it to a colleague as a lighter-moment in our stress and realized he might be too young to have lived through listserv meltdowns. ifykyk

The problem with this book release is it's midweek. So I read late, then have to read at lunchtime, because I have to keep doing the money-work, so I can keep buying the books. #GoodProblems (I was going to say "QualityProblems" but I think that hashtag could be misconstrued). Strong recommend.

Chad Johnson is CEO of 'Grain Weevil'. His son did robotics competitions in high school, which inspired this little fella that breaks up hardened surfaces & levels grain to ensure it behaves like a liquid, avoids clumping. This probably saves 10-30 human lives a year. NO BOOTS IN THE GRAIN.

For those interested, my bees are in their hives. The weather has turned unsettled and we've had warm sunny days for them to go out and explore, but more cold and wet, especially in the evenings. So for now, I'm letting them do their bee things, & replenishing the feed as needed. Pics in the future.

@shropsfidgetpie.bsky.social Thinking of you. Thought I'd share something a bit different. Here's one of my 2 brand new hives (well the bit up top was previously loved, but new to my bees and me). The grass is temporary keeping the entrance small while they orient. The jar is sugar water for food.
Close up of a white Langstroth hive (the square box kind). There are bees clustered by the entrance and on the side. There is fresh long grass blocking part of the entrance and a Boardman feeder with a clear glass mason jar full of very pale yellow or tan sugar syrup on the other side of the entrance. A reel push mower can just barely be seen behind the hive. The bottom box is bright white freshly painted, there is an unpainted board, then abox with very worn paint

A small pile of 5 baby goats, all in various states of sleep on top of each other, on top of slightly muddy ground with winter-killed grass. There are 2 mostly black ones with short ears, two brown ones with long white ears, and one white one with long ears. The goat in the middle is mid-yawn, gently mlep-ing his tongue at the camera.

Have been assembling and painting the hives for the bees. Took nearly 30 minutes to build the first one, but less than 20 for the second. Also I'd found the instructions by then. Today's task is prepping the site. #beekeeping
Pine box with no bottom or top resting on short pieces of 2x4 on a concrete driveway. A stopwatch rests on the corner, reading 28 minutes, 45 seconds Several parts of a hive are suspended on pieces of wood between two metal storage shelves in the process of being painted white. There is newspaper spread on the floor below them to catch drips.

Stepped out my front door to check the weather this morning, and said an audible " uh-oh "at the sight of a long strand of dried grass dangling at eye level. Sure enough, it looks as though one of our neighbors is considering nesting on top of the light beside the door.

A friend just sent me this perfect piece by Karel Čapek, trans. Dora Round, ‘From the Point of View of a Cat’.
From the Point of View of a Cat
This is my Man. I am not afraid of him. He is very strong, for he eats a great deal; he is an Eater of All Things. What are you eating? Give me some!
He is not beautiful, for he has no fur. Not having enough saliva, he has to wash himself with water. He meows in a harsh voice and a great deal more than necessary. Sometimes in his sleep he purrs.
Let me out!
I don’t know how he has made himself Master; perhaps he has eaten something sublime.
He keeps my rooms clean for me.
In his paws he carries a sharp black claw and he scratches with it on white sheets of paper. That is the only game he plays. He sleeps at night instead of by day, he cannot see in the dark, he has no pleasures. He never thinks of blood, never dreams of hunting or fighting; he never sings songs of love.
Often at night when I can hear mysterious and magic voices, when I can see that the darkness is all alive, he sits at the table with his head bent and goes on and on, scratching with his black claw on the white papers. Don’t imagine that I am at all interested in you. I am only listening to the soft whispering of your claw. Sometimes the whispering is silent, the poor dull head does not know how to go on playing, and then I am sorry for him and I meow softly in sweet and sharp discord. Then my Man picks me up and buries his hot face in my fur. At those times he divines for an instant a glimpse of a higher life, and he sighs with happiness and purrs something which can almost be understood.
But don’t think that I am at all interested in you. You have warmed me, and now I will go out again and listen to the dark voices.
Translated by Dora Round; revised by the editor. Originally published in Intimate Things, 1935.

ok but why does this owl at a watering hole in the Namib desert (which I saw via the watering hole's webcam) look like a little old English lady-owl on an evening walk who kicked off her shoes but left her stockings on to cool her feet in a pond on the outskirts of the village?
Nighttime picture of a human-established watering hole in the Namib Desert. It's round, apparently concrete, with a small concrete "island" in the center, and there is an owl at the edge, which we see from behind. The owl's wings are folded against its body in a manner that suggests a short jacket; its legs look like the owl is wearing white stockings, and its head is turned to the left; we can see one eye (shining in the watering hole's low light), and a very little bit of its beak.

Franzi Schimmer captured this Grizzly bear in Brooks Falls, Alaska just floating along, tippy-tapping down the river, browsing the salmon. Prior to hibernation, up to 40% of a bear's body mass is fat, which is less dense than water (~0.9 g/cm^2), so the murder-monster is also a floaty-boaty.

Yes it could be argued that keeping up with world events is important but alternatively can I interest you in hugging an ancient mossy boulder that looks like a face and quietly listening while it tells you stories from centuries cloaked in mist.
A lovely mossy boulder with a face. I walked past this venerable stone gentleman on Dartmoor when I was beginning to write my first novel, Villager, and it whispered all 104,000 words of the book to me. So now I have to pay it all of my royalties. Unfortunately my ex-publisher stopped paying me royalties last year. Understandable, the boulder was not happy. But now I have a new publisher and the book is being republished this Thursday. So remember if you purchase a copy you will be helping a boulder to eat, pay the rent on his riverside moss garden, and feed his boulder family.

Christmas is hard for many. The years roll, the ghosts at the table increase. We’re haunted by the absence of voices, of laughter engines who drank and ate with us. This can be day of remembrance rituals. For what it’s worth, Hooklanders near and far are in my candles today. Be gentle on yourselves.

A poem for Winter Solstice: "The Shortest Day" by Susan Cooper, author The Dark is Rising and numerous other luminous books. The image is from www.thelostland.com. The poem is © Susan Cooper.
The Shortest Day by Susan Cooper: And so the Shortest Day came and the year died / And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world / Came people singing, dancing, / To drive the dark away. / They lighted candles in the winter trees; / They hung their homes with evergreen; / They burned beseeching fires all night long / To keep the year alive. / And when the new year’s sunshine blazed awake / They shouted, reveling. / Through all the frosty ages you can hear them / Echoing behind us—listen! / All the long echoes, sing the same delight, / This Shortest Day, / As promise wakens in the sleeping land: / They carol, feast, give thanks, / And dearly love their friends, / And hope for peace. / And now so do we, here, now, / This year and every year. / Welcome, Yule!
