In the days of yore, free range children used to know where the nasty kid hating old people lived and would mess with them for entertainment.

They need to figure out how to compete with Mr Beast and his ilk; Hollywood is fast becoming entertainment for old people that kids these days largely ignore.

ayyyyyyy while fascist billionaires are speed-running the collapse of the TV/film industry, I hope artists and writers in Hollywood are thinking about what they want the industry that rises out of its ashes to look like bcuz this industry is going to need leaders that give a shit about making art

Breaking News! Code UFB!!! For the first time in recorded history, the Niño 3.4 sea-surface temperature (SST) is above 30.0°C, reaching a preliminary SST of 30.06°C on October 5th. The Niño 3.4 SST anomaly is now 3.41°C above the 1991-2020 baseline. Everything is not fine.

I took a course on the history of science and technology in the early modern period in engineering school 25 years ago. In hindsight it was one of the more important courses I took. NVM that critical thinking part, writing well is what gets you promoted as a practicing engineer, not doing calcs.

It is the same phenomenon as the backlash against Fauci. People do their own research and don't believe the experts. Economists are the experts. The salience of expertise across all domains is collapsing and all societies appear to be grappling with this issue.

A thread about American political periodicity. Folks on the right lately have talked about a 4th turning. The press mentions a 7th party system emerging if Texas goes blue. There is a notable periodicity to Americans politics between the parties if you look at the data, what does it mean.

The only marriage advice I can give is to be a good bartender. Know your spouses favorite drink, and, more importantly, know when they need one before they ask. No one ever turns down their favorite cocktail. A dirty martini goes a long way to making a shitty day just a little better for my wife

Observation - Texas and California have voted together for president 14 times total since the end of reconstruction; 7 for each party, and separate 24 times. It been 9 elections since they voted together, the largest gap since the 10 election streak immediately following reconstruftion.

If my kids (oldest is a HS soph) think that something was made by AI they instantly despise it. Seems like they catch a lot of strays too, errantly claiming AI. People making merch for various things (esp school related) need to knock it off with the AI, it's so tacky and the kids hate it.

One of the long run structural issues in the US is this right here causing so much hate. Cities used to be places of the poor, which white flight only intensified a couple generations ago. This century the urban donut is collapsing, pushing poor people to rural areas away from wealthy cities.

Expanding on my theory that the vibesession is the end of the modern era and dawn of a new era. The pillars of medieval society, the church and the monarchies they supported, were replaced by the press, universities, and constitutional government as the modern era dawned.

Most people did not believe this was true and the press certainly never gave away the game. The masses have had a great awakening after talking directly to each other online for a few years; a worldwide phenomenon.

IMHO the Vibesession is the unresolved need to move into a new political era. A "blow it all up" layer on top of normalcy that isn't typically present in major numbers until change is imminent. The newest Civilization game actually added a game mechanism for this shift that appears historically.

What? When I look at this chart of approval, continuous decline is what I see. There is nothing flat about it. Calling what is clear sampling noise a trend when the actual trend is something different and blatantly obvious is disingenuous at best.

I sure hope they don't order these troops to try to reopen Hormuz. They would need at least 10 times as many troops to even have a slight chance. Gallipoli during WW1 was a failure with 500k soldiers.

If you ask someone today to name the builder of Hadrian's Wall, they would give you a funny look. But historical memory is odd, and right up to the 1800s we forgot who built it. Until in 1840 John Hodgson, an obscure Northumbrian clergyman, published the LONGEST footnote in history... 1/22

I don't think people are seriously considering the possibility that this war will trigger a mass cross border migration of a size no army can deal with. Tehran was on the verge of being uninhabitable before the bombs started dropping and a leadership power vacuum was created.
