The angry old get off my lawn neighbor is a trope as old as film. Virtually every 80's movie about a group of kids included this person. We had a couple in the neighborhood when growing up back then. Boomers are merely carrying on the tradition.

In the days of yore, free range children used to know where the nasty kid hating old people lived and would mess with them for entertainment.

He wouldn't have made the statement if he thought white supremacists thought he was white. Minnesotans don't introduce themselves as the descendents of Norwegian settlers as there is no cultural need to justify their whiteness.

If his great-grandparents were the first new world settlers, this is centuries after the genocide. Great-grandparents is circa Spanish-American War, 1900ish. Cuban genocide era is like 15x great grandparents.

Well the "government is the problem" era still rules (Obamacare is m4a for people who believe this, Clintonism is Democratic agreement with this core of Reaganism), but it's starting to look shaky. Mandamism is not of this era.

Waldo @waldo42.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Whiteness is not a race, it's a concept somewhat related to skin color, individually defined by the one wielding the concept. Rubio believes he's white because of his Spanish great-grandparents.

Not really. We are about due for it to swing back the other direction. And there are plenty of signs that this is in fact occurring.

It's wink and nod way to say I'm white, rather than being of native or African descent.

Not all though are obsessed with the geneology from Spain. That is a very particular group.

Waldo @waldo42.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
From Spain was the more important part. Aka "I'm white".

This isn't a constant that goes back to the founding. That America is basically a center-right country goes back to about the last time Iran impacted political sentiment in the US.

MAGA is the purest essence of Reaganism. "Government is the problem" - while giving a wink and nod to "states rights". Aka Doge and Ice to the current admin.

"Get the right to say particular words" is the flipside of what's happening; you must say these words. Not sure the crowd happy say the R-word again is going to be so accepting of being forced to use different words for AI.

It was never hard to party on campus, just follow the herds of freshmen on Friday/Saturday night, they will lead you to the party.

Waldo @waldo42.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
When I was in college, on campus frats were banned from having alcohol at their parties and regularly policed. Thus frats weren't very popular. Plenty of partying elsewhere though.

Seems like we are entering an overall era of biotech, moving on from the silicon era. High tech didn't and won't always mean computer chips. Sequencing the human genome->mRNA vaccines->???

They need to figure out how to compete with Mr Beast and his ilk; Hollywood is fast becoming entertainment for old people that kids these days largely ignore.

ayyyyyyy while fascist billionaires are speed-running the collapse of the TV/film industry, I hope artists and writers in Hollywood are thinking about what they want the industry that rises out of its ashes to look like bcuz this industry is going to need leaders that give a shit about making art

Indigenous communities near present-day Milwaukee likely hand-carved the white-oak vessel before shaping it with fire between roughly 992 and 1049 C.E.

Hold up, we're spending that much and doing all this so that the media would stop talking about the Epstein files, the Trump admins disclosure problems, and Prince Andrew's related arrest. Things have snowballed from there and new justifications made, but it's still Epstein at the core.

Railroads reliably went bust every 20 years or so. 1857, 1873, 1893, 1910's, 1930's, 1950's. No single company survived through all the cycles, though manufacturing rail seems like the most stable business of the early industry.

The ol download the free trial version, swap some files in the install directory, use fully unlocked pro version method worked for a loooong time. They weren't even trying to stop it (there are benefits to everyone knowing of and how to use your software, a form of advertising).

Did Adobe ever actually sell software to regular users? Its always been super expensive yet comically easy to pirate (going back to the 90's), something they put forth no real effort to fix or police. Its had open source copycats all along. They make their money on business licenses.

Breaking News! Code UFB!!! For the first time in recorded history, the Niño 3.4 sea-surface temperature (SST) is above 30.0°C, reaching a preliminary SST of 30.06°C on October 5th. The Niño 3.4 SST anomaly is now 3.41°C above the 1991-2020 baseline. Everything is not fine.

MTV, Comedy Central, and the Food Network were among the first wave of channels to be grossly out-competed by YouTube for core content (music videos, stand up, recipe demonstrations).

I took a course on the history of science and technology in the early modern period in engineering school 25 years ago. In hindsight it was one of the more important courses I took. NVM that critical thinking part, writing well is what gets you promoted as a practicing engineer, not doing calcs.

Bills got a whole lot of money riding on it being powerful enough to kill off a substantial portion of humanity and not merely a chatbot. Clearly the military and it's infinite pockets should take control and put an end to the risk. The risk that Bill's investments flop.

Its because Trump is turbocharged Reaganism and the electorate is forgetting (dying off...) why it thought Reagan was the answer. Is government really the problem? Obamacare is m4a for people that believe government is the problem. This core principle has ruled for 46 years now.

Also the panic of '57, panic of '73, and great railway transportation crisis of the '10's. Railway bubbles and collapses were like the black death, they kept recurring every 20 years or so to kill off investors.

Waldo @waldo42.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Bondholders of railways to nowhere were left holding the bag over and over. Just about everyone involved in investing in railroads went bust. A few times.

Its a great book that seems to directly relate to today. The Ottoman and Egyptian Sultans drunk on credit really parallel the AI companies. The Vienna market and South Korean market likewise are so similar. History echoes and rhymes.

End like the railroad boom. Do you mean the 1870's collapse, the 1890's collapse, the 1910's collapse? Railroad busts were a lot like the black death, reoccuring waves every other decade rinsing investors each time.

The science behind ionizing radiation, the energy point at which photons interact with matter enough to alter it, which we can calculate easily, it's all fake apparently, bad theory. Wavelengths that transmit through matter as if it's invisible scare (some) people.

This assumes the 3 factions of the right will continue to play nice and form a coherent "they" going forward. God enthusiasts, confederates, and brunchlords tend not to actually agree on much and have very different priorities.
010
Waldo @waldo42.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Oh man. Going full tinfoil hat. It takes an elementary understanding of EM radiation and how it interacts with matter to utterly disregard the conspiracy theories. Flat earthers have more of leg to stand on.

They can just walk away. It would cause profound change, but they can do it. Do the Saudi monarchy and United Emirates survive? Probably not. Does this drastically change the world? Yes.
