A lot to enjoy in Anthony Lane's New Yorker profile of Paweł Pawlikowski (IDA, COLD WAR, the upcoming FATHERLAND), especially his description of the 69-year-old filmmaker as "middle-aged." www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

I do not mean to single out LeBron James, but it feels completely bizarre to me that an active player is allowed to promote "prediction markets" but would get banned for life for using that service to bet ten dollars on their own team to win a game.

By complete coincidence, last night I watched TWO-MINUTE WARNING (1976), featuring Jack Klugman as a degenerate gambler and his QUINCY costar Garry Walberg as the governor of California. With Merv Griffin singing the national anthem. The movie is terrible.

will get old and die waiting for someone to say "At least you tried." When I worked at EW, I used to say that our five worst selling covers of the year should be the five stories we most believed in. Because when you pander and sell badly, you accomplish nothing. Same is true in movies, I think. >
