I think I honestly have about as much insight and understanding of the thinking of supreme court justices as I do of the mullahs of Iran

"You've worked hard all your life accruing all that wealth via soaring house prices and nice defined-benefit pensions, and we think it's wrong for the state to touch it via inheritance tax. But it's totally fine for the government to deny your 24-year-old kid support based off of it"

It's not a foolproof plan but every political debate from now on should be a Normal Guy competition. Ask them to describe grocery shopping in detail. Talk about what it's like to have a friend

Trump misstating and touting a meaningless deal over Greenland, while the entire Middle East security architecture falls apart due to his own actions, is emblematic of this administration’s foreign policy.

Remember the deal was: you give up collective bargaining and provisions to protect you in unemployment or ill health, and you gain cheap goods, social mobility and a house? And now nothing works, everything is expensive, the public realm is visibly degraded and about ten guys own the whole world.

Someone tried to be clever again and it didn’t work. People need to stop and ask themselves: will my users/customers/clients want this to be clever, or would they prefer it to be predictable?

My new electronic keyboard can play a vast multitude of backing accompaniments - rock, calypso, bossa nova etc. So I will not encourage my children to learn how to play music, a skill that will likely be obsolete in a few years from now.

gonna start a conspiracy theory that it's actually linear algebra itself that makes people start believing head-slappingly cockamamie pseudo-religious nonsense, like people think studying the nature of infinity makes you lose it wait'll you hear about positive semidefinite matrices

…would call ‘do-gooders’ - a hugely revealing insult if ever there was one. But it’s just not in the arsenal any more, because the mainstream British right wing has an unearned victimhood complex visible from the moon. Never has the world witnessed such a gaggle of whinging, self-pitying arseholes.

”A wealth tax will drive out investment” has got to be the most bullshit argument ever, capital in aggregate is institutional and international, and no country is going to be better off for having the idiot failsons of billionaires soaking up labour for pointless luxury

If I won the lottery I would hire an interior designer and just say “Columbo murderer” while waving my hand around my home office.

People are not good at the difference between ”assets were overvalued” and ”we were living beyond our means”. All those kitchens really did get refurbished, even if it was off the back of inflated house prices. Like the man said: Anything we can do, we can afford.

From 2019, when the news was telling us that staring seagulls out had been proven to stop them eating your chips
[Scene is a BEACH. A man is sat eating chips on a blanket - or rather he is trying to, but a terrifying, haunted-eyed SEAGULL is stood next to him, staring intently]

SEAGULL:

Well well well.

You must be one of these ‘Starers’.

[Show man trying to stare the seagull out]

SEAGULL:

Read an article in the Guardian did ya? ‘Stare seagulls out to save your chips’...

Come on then.
Look into my eyes.

[We see his cold, terrifying, haunted eyes in close up]

Can you see the darkness?
The things I’ve seen?

[Hypnotic waves are coming out of his eyes now]

The things I’ve... eaten...?

Frozen shit from a sewage pipe off the coast of Sussex…
The still-pulsing intestines from a badger by the A602…

Thaaat’s it

Look into the truth

The truth you’ve always known.

I am a seagull.

I am harder than you.

And I am having your chips.

11 [The man’s facade breaks, His eyes water, his lips wobble]

SEAGULL [Eating chips]:

Nom nom nom.

In the passenger seat as my mate lightly bumped a shopping trolley when parking his dad’s car. He asked me to check there weren’t any scratches as I got out. Got out, duly checked the shopping trolley, turned around and reported no, no scratches. He just stared at me.
