I suspect comfort food conundrums are a common autistic immigrant experience anywhere. Really wanting stuff you can't get, struggling with established local comfort foods (big potential for social awkwardness there) and getting into new foods in the "wrong" way somehow.

I would drink several cups a day if I could get my hands on some delicate white tea here, with rose buds in, but no luck so far.

I might have one bourbon cream biscuit with a small cup of a smokey loose leaf tea once a week, otherwise I'm having coffee.

Every so often a friend notices that there's exactly the amount of tea bags and biscuits in my flat as when they last visited and they cannot fathom how. It's because I only keep English tea and biscuits for you, my dears. I'm not secretly consuming that stuff when you're not looking.

More stews also so friends can come round and eat them. Autumn and winter my dinner table gets a good lot of use. I've always insisted on having a dinner table, even when I didn't have a bedroom or lounge. One needs to plan revolutions and eat

Have had that horrible experience of being asked to change the briefest paragraph in one of my books so a particular foreign publisher could avoid arrest in that country’s massive LGBTQ+ crackdown. I had to decline and therefore not be published - you don’t negotiate with tyrants - but what a world.

The iron pan is blackening up in the oven. I'll use the heat to roast potatoes and garlic when it's done. The oven is also my friend, I truly love it.

Doing a service wash on the dishwasher is one of the happiest things I know. The dishwasher is my friend, I've known my entire life that I would be significantly happier all the time when I would have a dishwasher, and yes, I am. Now it's gargling with citric acid, getting fresh and shiny.

I still dream now and then that I am in a difficult rental situation, things like having to sleep on the floor and being told to be grateful by the landlady. Then the thing to do in the morning is tend to my flat.

Two hours of free electricity for me today, so I'll do service washes, a rag wash and season the iron pan in the oven. Feeling happy about that.

And I'm particularly happy that there is no one left in my life who calls me shy and tries to cure me of it. I have nightmares about that sometimes but in reality it doesn't happen any more and that's wonderful.

I can honestly say that I've never found a limit to how much I love other people, all of humanity, the people in my life in particular, but also they tire me out as sure as water is wet. All of them. That's very okay. I'm very happy that I get to have alone time these days.

Why can't we accept that in order to tap into your strengths and potential you might need to fix something debilitating. A diagnosis is a pathway INTO being a successful and happy person (however you want to define that, I'm choosing not to define it by 'has a good job and makes loads of money')
