The crusaders.

'We make LESS but things cost MORE!' says Girl. 'RETVRN!' cries a crusading Cat. 'To when we made less and things cost the same! Weather is spiraling out of control - with 2 degrees of warming baked in.' 'RETVRN!' cries Cat. 'To weather spiraling out of control with 1.5 degrees of warming baked in' says Girl. 'People aren't going to the emergency room because they're afraid of immigration-' 'RETVRN!' '-they should be NOT GOING because they CAN'T AFFORD IT! Leopards are eating my face=' 'RETVRN!' '- to when leopards were eating YOUR face!' 'RETVRN to 2015!' cries Cat. 'Sound the battle horn!' yells Girl. Cat plays a long golden horn, which blasts out the sound 'GOOD ENOUGH.' 'Now we just wait for an army to assemble,' says Cat. They wait.

Wheels within wheels.
' I need wheels,' Cat says. 'Well you can't get a job here at the wheels factory' Girl replies. 'I don't need a job.' 'Unless you already know how to make wheels,' Girl says. 'I need wheels.' 'You can't learn to make wheels,' she continues. 'Because -' 'Unless you get a wheels degree. '- when it no longer had to compete - ' says Cat straining. 'And you can't afford a wheels degree.' ' - with Communism' says Cat, pulling at a handle with both hands. 'Unless your family can pay for your wheels degree' '- in the global marketplace of ideas -' says Cat, wiping his brow. 'But it costs more than they make,' says Girl. '- the wheels fell off Capitalism' Cat finishes. 'Down at the wheels factory', says Girl. 'So I just need some wheels' says Cat, dragging a wheel-less wheeled suitcase. 'Oh,' says Girl. 'We don't make wheels any more.'

What do we seek' asks Girl. 'Food.' '-but novelty,' she says. 'And shelter.' 'The mild surprise, the new thing, unboxed. 'Which are getting kind of pricey' says Cat. 'What does the blind box reveal - ' 'Its contents?' asks Cat. ' - but a need to channel the ambient instability of our age into a controllable, consumable toy version of itself.' 'I tried unboxing once' says Cat. 'So why not both.' 'But I couldn't get the gloves to fit.' 'Why not BLIND BOXES but for FOOD?' 'Beans!' says Cat, peering into an unmarked can. He opens a second can. 'Beans?' A third can. 'Beans. What's the surprise?' 'Botulism!' Says Girl. 'Twenty percent of the world's wealth I owned by one percent of its population.'

'To make enough money - to be ground under the heels of the handful of inept Billionaire scam artists who took everyting - just like everyone else.' SSSSIP Cat sips his coffee. How to make money in the media industry.
Cat waits at a bus stop checking his phone while Girl walks by selling newspapers. 'EXTRA EXTRA' she shouts, 'Read all about it in the Poo York Times. A newspaper you can read on the toilet!' She hands Cat a section of the newspaper. 'P Magazine' he reads. 'All your favorite sections!' says Girl. 'This is 90% ads for toilet paper' says Cat, continuing to read. 'All your favorite features! And weirdly -' Cat interrupts. 'That I can't afford.' '-higher ethical standards than the New York Times.' Cat becomes enraged. 'There's TOO MUCH going on in the world to WASTE TIME with this POTTY HUMOR!' 'If you don't want to laugh read Metropolitan Diarrhea' says Girl, handing Cat another section. 'Blech' he says.

Cat and Girl vs. the Audience
'There is a difference between a phone and a radio' says Girl. 'There is a difference between a video cassette recorder and a video cassette player!' says Cat. 'One allows you to talk WITH people,' says Girl. 'All the tru artist needs' says Cat, holding a VHS tape. 'One allows you to talk AT people,' continues Girl. 'Is the tool that lets YOU record - CONTROL' Cat continues. They go back and forth. 'Or be talked at.' 'And sometimes a little piece of tape.' 'But my every mode of communication does both! And I can't tell who is talking at me and who is talking with me - and when I respond - I'm not sure which one I'M doing!' 'What are we watching?' 'And sometimes' 'The rending of the wall between public and private - friend and audience - friend and customer - everyone creating MLMs - not works - not worlds.' 'I can't remember what the difference is.' 'You haven't looked until you've seen -' 'What are we watching?' 'Us,' Cat replies.

'Life is a piece of cake - easy as pie' - Cat straightens his bowtie - 'as long as you know which side your bread is buttered on.' 'Neither!' Says Girl. TOOT TOOT The All the Butter truck drives by, driven by Mr. Monopoly, who is laughing. Cat and Girl looks at each other. Girl starts to eat. 'I don't need butter' says Girl. What's the point!?!

Cat and Girl are spending a Sunday afternoon on the island of La Grande Jatte. 'Believe in education begins as a practical step,' says Girl. 'A potential pathway to a higher standard of living. The education itself becomes a virtue - isn't it GOOD to learn? To be curious about the world? Then you look around - at the most successful people in society - and see society's most self-satisfied, least curious members - with thoughts only for their own dominance - so why learn ANYTHING if it doesn't directly benefit me? Am I just a SUCKER?' They now look out across the island's far shore, and then walk into the waves. 'Yet I still believe,' continues Girl, 'even if the beliefs is negative - even if it's a relic - the Edwardian women still wearing a bustle when the rest of the world has moved on.

'Does Cookie Monster even like cookies?' Girl asks. 'Nom nom nom!' says Cat, eating a cookie. 'Or does he feel compelled to eat them' continues Girl. 'Nom?' Asks Cat. 'Because it's his job - because it's his IDENTITY - or because he alone stands between is and the cookies of the world, sacrificing himself so that we may live on obliviously, cookie-less, FREE. 'Non nom nom!' says Cat. 'And who then is the real monster' says Girl. 'Nom nom nominative determinism' says Cat.

A Brief History of Reviewing Things on the Internet, Vol. I
'I review things on the internet!' says Girl. 'I'm basically like a minor god. I was here when the heavens were torn asunder and the first giants appeared. And I was an active participant in a mailing list discussion about the best pizza in New York. I just really love this one place! More people should go there! I was here when the giants tore out chunks of their own flesh to create the internet. And I reviewed every restaurant I ate at for a website of restaurant reviews - which felt helpful! And have me a sense of expertise - and of power - I was here when the children of the giants - fine-featured, gold-clad Googles and Facebooks - turned on their parents and killed them and claimed the internet as their own. And as more people left reviews they melded together into CONTENT and I was just doing WORK for FREE. And the reviews were pulled into aggregators to be pulped alongside thousands of others, stripped of personal histories and nuance and reconstituted as a single number.'

Cat and Girl walk the surface of a desolate planet. 'If you believe - ' starts Girl. 'A fun game is' says a smiling Cat. ' - technology is progress -' 'when you read the fortune from your fortune cookie' '- then things are the way they are because we haven't invented our solution yet -' 'you add 'on the moon!'' '- and not because of choices we've made.' 'You will have good luck in business - on the moon!' says Cat. 'What we allowed to become important.' says Girl. 'A chance happening will reveal your destiny - on the moon!' says Cat. 'Or', says Girl, 'a decades-long national project of government and business to eradicate our empathy for each other and isolate us.' 'Mission Control likes my jokes' says Cat.

At the carnival.
'What do you say to tomorrow?' asks Girl as the roller coaster ticks upward. 'We were doomed by everyone who came before us' Cat answers as it starts to head downhill. 'When you've spent all their todays" continues Girl - 'Or we've disappointed everyone who lived before us' says Cat - 'and all that's left' says Girl - 'and doomed everyone to coma after us!' says Cat - 'is three pasts in a today suit, selling our own future back to us.' 'Or is everyone yet to come disappointing US?' Cat demands. 'Everything of value - reduced to money - and accumulated at the low, low cost of our collective future.' Girl says. 'Loss is a shroud worn by the living' says Cat. 'So who's to blame us for buying our token souvenirs of the preset and holding on to them as tight as we can?' asks Girl as the coaster car comes to a stop. They pause. Later, Cat and Girl are at a souvenir shroud stand holding cotton candy. 'Two shrouds please' says Cat. 'Plain or tie-dye?' asks the guy at the stand.

Scored the True Stories book, and wanted to share the opening essay: “Empires in retreat get into some pretty weird stuff.”
American towns expand in concentric rings. At the moment the center of most urban doughnuts is a hole. The modern urban center maybe has some new glass office buildings in it but it's just a shell for people to work in. There's no life there. Nobody really lives there. In smaller towns, like Virgil, at least the original Main Street is left. Around the urban center is a ring of lower buildings, beautiful old dwellings that are now in disrepair. These are the buildings that were abandoned when white people fled to the suburbs. Now these same people and their sons and daughters are beginning to move back in and restore these buildings. The condition of these buildings has gone from being grand, to a state of disrepair and decay, to a state of cute.
Beyond this ring of urban decay and now gentrification, there's usually a highway or ring road or some kind of freeway that circles the whole town. Along these freeways are bumps of clean industry interspersed with newer residential areas. Beginning at this ring and expanding outward are loads of houses being built out onto the plains. Many people who were raised in falling-down old houses, well, now they want something new. They don't want to get married and live in another falling-down old house, so they move out here. The construction may not be as sturdy, but it's brand new. It's theirs. (I have something to say about the difference between American cities and European cities but I forget what it is. I've got it written down at home somewhere.) Americans have totally ignored or forgotten what, for Europeans, are the unwritten laws that govern what makes a city liveable. They're proving that you can make a city work even if people can't tell it's working.
Trammell Crow, Sr., was just finishing up the Info Mart while we were shooting True Stories. It's one of the weirdest pieces of architecture ever, a huge trade mart devoted to the microelectronics industry, modeled after the Crystal Palace or maybe it was the Brighton Pavilion. It's like trying to make a computer look like a grandfather clock.
If you can think of it, if you can imagine it, it exists some-where. The largest shopping center in the world has a really long serpentine lake in the middle of it, and five submarines go up and down it. The waters are infested with sharks and surrounded by jungle. I couldn't have made this up. It's in Edmonton, Canada. It exists. True. story: I was just recently told about a man in Texas who's soliciting funds to build a wall around the state modeled after the Great Wall of China.
It takes people here to have the audacity to build something like the Info Mart and make it work. You feel like you're laughing at it and admiring it at the same time. It's a great feeling. Kind of cheers you up. In my various research trips to Texas I looked around and I could see where the dramatic events in True Stories could take place and who would be there and what it would look like. I could redraw all the storyboards based on real people. It became clear where the different characters' lives would overlap and where they would run into each other. The story is just a trick to hold your attention. It opens the door and lets the real movie in.
Movie making is a trick. Song writing is a trick. If a song is done really well, the trick works. If not, people can see through it right away. Maybe this movie can be a trick and show you how the trick is done at the same time. Maybe this book can kind of do that too. Most movies show you something and tell you how you're supposed to feel about it. They're edited in a way that tells you what you're supposed to be looking at before you decide that's what you want to be looking at.It's a trick, and when it doesn't work, it's really offensive, because you know someone's trying to trick you, and they think you can't tell.
The new patriotism is also a trick. It's a real frightening, scary trick that everyone wants so badly to believe is true. The government is selling the country down the river. The real wealth of the country is in the people.
Empires in retreat get into some pretty weird stuff. Egypt, Rome, England, Japan, Spain, and now the United States. They get this intense pride and nostalgia for what they imagine they are and what they imagine they were because they can see it slipping away. America had a lot of free money for a long time.
Money that came out of the ground. In Texas it just shot right out of the ground. All you had to do was look around and find it. When cheap slave labor ran out we just brought some over from overseas. The expansion got a little out of hand, but it's over now. Some of us might have seen the tail end of the heyday, but now most of us can feel reality settling in.
Some people think it's the end of the world; they think Jesus is going to come. He didn't come when Nero fiddled. Why should he come for us? Some people think outsiders are dragging us down. Some people think we just got on the wrong diets—not eating enough vegetables. Some people think we can jog away the fat. Some people get depressed and turn to drugs or drinking. Some people get depressed and go to par-ties—getting all dressed up for the end of the world. Some people are going to escape into a space station to live on artificial worlds. Some people turn inside themselves or go to India. Some people are investing in real estate. Some people go to school and try to analyze the situation. Some people are arming themselves, storing up ammunition and cans of food, getting ready for the invasion. Some people are waiting for the visitors from outer space to come, getting ready for the land-ing, and preparing a welcome.
Tab with vitamins. Diet cola with vitamins.... That's a sure sign. Some of these people are here, in this movie. Some of them we left out.
Then there's the other kind of people. People who seem to have found some kind of ethical center. They might be floundering around a little bit but it's a noble kind of floundering.
Sometimes it's hard to tell one kind from the other.
For years we have been taught not to like things. Finally somebody said it was OK to like things. This was a great relief.
It was getting hard to go around not liking everything. The thing about it is, all of these people are right. None of them is wrong. They are setting a good example, and in this film and book I'm teaching myselt to appreciate them. Besides, it was a lot of fun.

'Then we staged a musical based on a movie about the wheel,' Cat continues, 'to leverage our existing wheel I.P. Then we read the book about the wheel on a podcast about the book about the wheel. as a culture we have really given "ideas" way too much credit. ideas are a dime a dozen. they happen all the time. the magic is way more in the doing, and the doing's diminished stature is linked to lack of respect for labor and, more recently, skill and expertise.
