It’s more general than that, but it’s an example. City policy promises “We will never place the speed and convenience of cars above the safe movement of people.” Yet some residents demand the opposite. When residents berate staff for following policy, staff needs Council’s vocal and public support.

These folks think fewer lanes mean more congestion and their “common sense” and anecdotes override expertise and data. They know better than the engineers and planners and they certainly know better than the folks advocating for safety. The status quo is perfectly fine, as far as they are concerned.

We see similar issues regularly when bikeways and sidewalks and roads are closed for construction. Detours are posted… for drivers. Pedestrians and cyclists are only occasionally accommodated.

Something should be done with construction barricades and Jersey barriers to repurpose a lane from Geddes until the corridor is restored. Make it one-way inbound in the morning and outbound in the afternoon to accommodate commutes. Cars going the other direction can be detoured to Glazier Way.

There is no viable alternative route suggested. No detour posted. Users are expected to “plan alternate travel routes” themselves. Neither Geddes nor East Huron River Drive have sidewalks, let alone bike lanes. There’s no timeline for filling those gaps.

Ann Arbor has closed the B2B trail through Gallup Park due to failing culverts. We don’t want to discount this safety issue. But if this were a roadway, and drivers were affected, the city would have prioritized creating an alternative. As usual, people outside cars are an afterthought. #A2Council

Basically every time the city came up with a way to mitigate a complaint the goalposts moved. When it came down to it they just didn’t want to see people walking past their houses.

Loss of privacy. Loss of gardens (planted within the public right of way). Loss of trees (even if the sidewalk is routed to protect them). Loss of parking (when the road is narrowed to place the sidewalk farther from adjacent front yards). Winter maintenance responsibilities.

City staff are have done a great job on community engagement with two walking tours of the project area. The next in-person opportunity to learn and provide feedback is an Open House on September 23 (Wednesday) from 5-7 p.m., at the DDA offices in Kerrytown (see link in original post for details).

Usually, negative feedback is the loudest. But persistent, enthusiastic, and supportive feedback from the community will counteract it. Your voice matters! Motornormativity is a huge barrier to getting safe infrastructure built, and pushing through it is a heavy lift for staff and electeds alone.

Speaking of anti-safety advocates, the road ragers are out in force against this project too. They are gathering to sign petitions to block it, saying that staff responsible for the design should be “sacked”, and showing up to public meetings with bad-faith questions and sarcastic remarks.

Anti-safety advocates tried to stop the city from putting in this sidewalk on a route to 3 schools. They fought it at every step, driving in from across town to pack public meetings and the neighborhood walk-through. It’s exhausting having to battle for every foot of sidewalk. Force them to transparently advocate for changing these policies. Until the city rescinds our commitment to Vision Zero, all streets must be designed to be safe for all road users. Until the city rescinds our commitment to carbon neutrality, cutting VMT is a major component of our climate action.
