if you are driving and you want to let a pedestrian know you are stopping so they can cross, the best way to do that is by stopping. Not driving at them while making impatient gestures.

Ann Arbor already prioritizes safety, according to our Transportation Plan. We are seeing slow progress, though, and still, some want to halt progress. Council, we need you to be bold in your support of staff. You already set the policy, and they are trying to carry it out. Cover them. #A2Council

Ann Arbor has closed the B2B trail through Gallup Park due to failing culverts. We don’t want to discount this safety issue. But if this were a roadway, and drivers were affected, the city would have prioritized creating an alternative. As usual, people outside cars are an afterthought. #A2Council

Anti-safety advocates tried to stop the city from putting in this sidewalk on a route to 3 schools. They fought it at every step, driving in from across town to pack public meetings and the neighborhood walk-through. It’s exhausting having to battle for every foot of sidewalk. But we won! #a2council

Ann Arbor has committed to: - Eliminating deaths and serious injuries on our roads - Cutting vehicle miles traveled in half If angry drivers want to block progress on those commitments, they are advocating for: - More traffic violence - More pollution Don’t let them pick the frame. #A2Council

My favorite (derogatory) traffic violence trope is how following a crash there's always some neighbor or witness talking about the fact that people regularly speed where a person was hit. I will always call this out because it reinforces that these are not accidents. www.wcvb.com/article/driv...
"There's cars that go way too fast down this street. I swear they go 40 to 50 miles per hour sometimes. It's like one long straightaway. There's nothing to deter cars from slowing down at all," Bartko said. "Students live around here. I live with a bunch of students—they've got to cross this road every day just to get to school."

Love that a prominent scientist is out here defending the science of transportation! Through scientific inquiry, we've learned and proven many of the things that work (and don't) for surface transpo safety. Bike lanes are proven to improve safety. If you believe in science, you agree with that.

Bike infrastructure is good for pedestrians and transit users (and drivers). It makes us all safer. When a self-styled “pedestrian safety advocate” tries to pit pedestrians against cyclists in Ann Arbor or anywhere else to argue against infrastructure, reject the framing. We are allies. #A2Council

#A2Council important stuff here for Ann Arbor to learn from. “Rather than relying on every individual to make the right decision every time, the framework reflects that people should be able to make ordinary mistakes on the road — without those mistakes hurting or killing themselves or others.”

American vehicles have grown heavier, faster, and wider every decade since 1982 — and federal fuel economy rules reward the growth. Evidence from 50 years of EPA data.

If walking costs you $1, we all pay $0.01. If biking costs you $1, we all pay $0.08. If bussing costs you $1, we all pay $1.50. If driving costs you $1, we all pay $9.20. Via study that still underestimates climate cost. This isn’t about choice. It’s about who pays for your choice. #citymakingmath
