How to tell if it's AI

AI: 1. Subject of image is almost always in the center. 2. "2.5D" This is a look where 2d and 3d shading are mixed, causing a dark "inward traveling" faux 3d shading. This is caused by AI training images including both 2d and 3d artwork. 3. Blurry, out of focus backgrounds also may occur from adding professional photos into the training data. 4. It's almost always lit from behind to side-step the issue of AI not conceptualizing light sources well. 5. Lineart is either unusually perfect, or completely missing. 6. Overly complicated backgrounds that add little to the image, such than an artist likely wouldn't have wasted so much time on it. 7. Canvas is usually perfectly square. If not square, it's typically precisely 895x1152px OR 1152x895px as these are the most common AI generator output canvas size options when generating an AI image. 8. All aspects of the image including the background are often high contrast, and over saturated with little distinction as to the foreground, middle-ground, background, and subject. All edges are likewise often equally blurry, regardless of importance in the canvas, though this isn't always the case in every AI model.

Art: 1. Drafts and works in progress. AI does not create work in the stages that human artists do, and instead compiles the finished image with no prior stages. 2. The art can be seen in the program that made it, such as a screenshot of a 3d program or art program with the art actively being made inside it. This can be faked, so be sure to see if the screenshot includes history, layers, or something else that implies art was actually being made and that it matches what is being shown. 3. Brush stroke direction, or any visible brush marks or pencil marks. 4. Irregularly shaped canvas, often following the rule of thirds. 5. Lineart that shows evidence of hand unsteadiness or later touchups. 6. Traces of sketch still visible under the finished piece. Though this isn't always in art, it is never in AI.

Of note: This isn't fool-proof. Sometimes real art might have one or two features associated with "ai generated images" such as remarkably clean lineart or being backlit, maybe even bad anatomy. What you should look for is large clusters of AI tells AND a lack of any real art tells.
