What’s the point of increasing gas exports for the Australian government and the Australian people? With the current gas tax legislation, it’s pointless. Co-CEO Richard Denniss breaks down who wins and who loses in the latest episode of “What’s the Point?”. #auspol @richarddenniss.bsky.social

A 25% tax on gas exports could raise $17 billion every year. That's enough to eliminate the annual $4 billion cost of out-of-pocket expenses for GP visits. ✍ Sign the petition for a plebiscite on a 25% gas export tax ⤵️ theaus.in/4ygY36E

Builders have to pay for bricks. Bakers have to pay for flour. It’s pretty obvious that the gas industry should have to pay for gas. Co-CEO Richard Denniss unpacks this issue in the latest episode of “What’s the Point?” #auspol @richarddenniss.bsky.social

The most frustrating thing is that so many of us just want a quiet life, free to just do our do, not hurt anyone, have a bit of fun, eat nice food, enjoy beauty all around us, be safe and sound. And yet, a tiny handful of self absorbed arseholes who wish to fuck the world for their own $$ benefit.

The gas industry's new argument for keeping the PRRT is that they will have to pay more PRRT than a 25% gas export tax so a 25% gas tax would be bad. Yeah. Uhuh.

The problem with the NDIS - and there is a problem - is the same one Australia always faces. If you let small businesses exploit the public purse, they'll exploit it mercilessly (remember pink batts or any one of a 100 such programs). The key is in the system design, not the auditing of it.

You often hear from gas companies that "yeah but we pay state royalties!!!" Lol nope. WA drivers pay more in rego and licence fees than gas companies pay WA in royalties. Heck WA gamblers pay more tax. And that's incredible given WA does NOT have pokies in pubs and clubs
Chart showing: WA drivers and gamblers pay more tax than gas companies pay royalties: 2025-26

Rego: $1,520m
Vehicle licence duty: $678m
Gambling taxes: $403m

The Gas industry now saying a 25% export tax would "stop investment in new gas supply, leading to gas shortfalls" Bullshit. Utter bullshit. 83% of Australia's gas is exported. THERE IS NO SHORTAGE
But the gas industry’s peak representative body, Australian Energy Producers, said a 25% levy against its exports would come at the “worst possible time for Australia’s economy and energy security”.

“Imposing higher taxes on Australian gas producers would stop investment in new gas supply, leading to gas shortfalls, higher energy prices, and the closure of Australian industries that rely on reliable and affordable gas,” AEP’s chief executive officer, Samantha McCulloch, said.Chart showing

in 2023-24 9,951PJ of gas was exported or used in LNG plants to convert gas to LNG

1,034PJ was used in Australia
