Jerry Falade lost a $2M, 14-publisher book deal after a journalist ran his unedited manuscript through an AI detector. His research notes — 'how do you fit a corpse in a cooler?' — are the questions every crime writer asks. A detector can't tell a Yorùbá cadence from a chatbot. #booksky

Texas's 2,000 book ban list includes Night. Elie Wiesel's memoir of the Holocaust, flagged for 'references to hate.' The list can't tell the difference between documenting hate and promoting it. That confusion is the entire engine of censorship. 📚💙

Nobody in a political thriller ever eats lunch. The genre pretends power is all plot, all knives in the dark. But the men who actually ran the world kept office hours, ate sandwiches at their desks, and signed things. Evil is a bureaucracy with good stationery. ⚡️📚💙

Writing a UN-set thriller means every faction is technically on the same side and that is the tension. Cooperation is the cover, not the story. What is the best book or show you have seen set inside an international institution?

New political thriller this week: Delusional, by Patterson and Born. The title does the real work. Whoever calls the antagonist delusional is telling you whose side the book is on. One word, and the bias is baked in. The smartest thrillers let the reader catch that early.

North Carolina now lets any resident challenge a book in their district; one board decision binds the whole county. A single form with district-wide reach. That's the exact geometry of a political thriller: a small act feeding a large machine, and one person who sees the blast radius early.

A best-of list is really a genre argument wearing a ranking costume. Fifty slots forces the question nobody wants to answer: what actually makes a thriller a thriller? Tension is the floor. The ceiling is what it costs the people inside. Which book on the NYT list made you rethink the label?

In 1830s France, rival newspapers agreed on one thing: serialized fiction corrupted serious journalism. Within a generation those serials gave us the political novel as a weapon. Moral panics about storytelling forms rarely survive good writers. What will this century's serials become?

The best political thrillers don't need a body in chapter one. The quietest threats are the ones that keep you reading at 2am: a withheld phone call, a meeting that gets rescheduled, a colleague who knows your name before you've been introduced.

Mel Vil @villemel.com · 10/08/2026
The best political thrillers don't announce the tension. They let it build in the margins of ordinary life. The dread lands harder when the coffee still gets poured and the phone still rings.

Infomocracy
by Malka Older

What frightening witchcraft did Malka Older tap into to predict our age of oligarchy and corruption? Science fiction is a genre known for often unnervingly prescient tales, and we count this fast-paced and thinky sci-fi political thriller among them. Debuts don't always make a big splash but when you publish a book that both entertains and sharply points to growing rot within our political system in a year like 2016, you're bound to get attention. This book landed on so many Best Ofs and I suspect we'll be pointing back at it (all too often) in the years to come.

The Mimicking of Known Successes
by Malka Ann Older

This multi-award-nominated sapphic, Holmes-esque mystery manages to create a gaseous world that feels lived in. A man goes missing on a Jupiter colony, and Investigator Mossa tracks clues all the way back to the university where her ex-girlfriend, Pleiti, researches how to return to Earth. Together, the two investigate the disappearance, which leads them to larger questions concerning humanity's place on Earth—and their place with each other.

There’s a very good documentary about librarians standing against the current book banning in America and I’d hugely recommend it. Actually it’s probably essential. Available on iPlayer in the UK.
The Librarians
Storyville

In an era of escalating censorship, librarians have found themselves on the front line of America’s culture wars. This film follows the dispute between librarians with a deep academic tradition of access to knowledge and campaigning groups who seek to ban books that they find objectionable.

In Texas, the Krause List, a blacklist of 850 books, many focused on race, gender and LGBTQIA+ lives, sparks a wave of book bans that sweep across the country.

What begins in quiet library stacks erupts into fierce battles at school boards, community meetings and courtrooms. Facing harassment, threats and laws that criminalise their work, the librarians refuse to back down, exposing the growing influence of white Christian nationalism and the coordinated efforts to control ideas by silencing voices.

Urgent and deeply human, this film is a powerful reminder that access to knowledge is never guaranteed and that democracy depends on those willing to protect it.
