“Confronted with a major protest on October 10 demanding the reversal of a purge of the voter rolls, he went on a self-incrimination spree. His government imposed measures reminiscent of the emergency era: no trains to New Delhi, paramilitary forces deployed at protest sites, the internet disrupted”

This seems to me a terrific article--moving, well made, and informative. The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest movement is modeling how to respond to the steady erosion of democracy.

It is so weird to go about the mundane stuff-groceries, bills, breakfast... all the while wondering if you could be arrested, your friends are being/ have been arrested. But that's life for journalists in India rn: carrying on w. the ordinary while bracing for the extraordinary.

The agitations are going to be messy, irreverent & noisy. There'll be a temptation to dwell on its purity, exuberance, rage. That would be a mistake. India’s protests shouldnt be romanticised or categorised. They are smthg more, smthg rare: they are unfinished. www.aljazeera.com/opinions/202...

The TRIPS Agreement has nothing to do with free trade and everything to do with protecting corporate monopolies. It’s why pharma was able to block South Africa from purchasing HIV/AIDS treatments in the '90s and why Moderna and J&J were able to monopolize COVID vaccines.
