29 September is Michaelmas, the feast of St. Michael and All Angels. St. Michael, traditionally the celestial warrior who leads the fight against evil, is patron saint of soldiers, paratroopers and police officers. The Michaelmas daisy, or aster, is his dedicated flower.

After today’s picture description, l have included a poem inspired by this capture.

Our photograph captures a peaceful autumn scene beside a calm stretch of water.

In the centre, a person sits in a long, narrow white rowing boat, viewed from behind. They wear a dark jacket and black cap, with long hair tied back.

Their hands hold a double-ended paddle, one blade cutting gently through the water as they move across the scene.

The boat creates soft ripples on the blue-green surface, while its reflection shimmers beneath it.

Around the water’s edge are tall reeds, grasses and tangled vegetation in muted shades of brown, gold and ochre.

The far bank is heavily shaded by trees and dense foliage, creating a dark backdrop that contrasts with the brighter water.

In the foreground, dry grasses and autumn leaves fill the lower part of the image, framing the boat and giving the photograph a distinctly seasonal atmosphere.

Warm sunlight catches parts of the vegetation, while deep shadows create a sense of quiet and solitude.

And finally, our picture is finished with a simple white border frame. And now for my poem…

I call it…Between Water and Silence

The paddle enters the water
and the silence opens.

One gentle stroke,
then another,
leaving a trail of ripples
behind a boat moving nowhere hurriedly.

Autumn gathers along the banks,
gold and brown beneath the fading light,
while the darker trees
hold their secrets in the shadows.

For a moment,
there is only water,
the quiet rhythm of the oar,
and the feeling of being carried forward.

Perhaps this is enough,
to leave the noise behind,
to follow the gentle current,
and discover that stillness
can be its own kind of journey.

The Speckled Wood was once called the “Wood Argus”, its eye-spots recalling Argus, the many-eyed giant guardian of Greek myth. Its scientific name, “Pararge aegeria”, also has a woodland link: Egeria was a Roman nymph associated with springs and sacred groves. #FolkloreSunday

At sunrise in Glacier, the mountains and forested shoreline are still in deep blue shadow. A narrow band of warm light shows between the peaks and the layered clouds, while brighter openings in the cloud cover cast gold onto the lake. The water is nearly calm near the far shore, with a faint strip of mist above it; closer to the camera, small ripples break the reflections into shifting patches of blue and amber. The sun itself has yet to clear the mountains, leaving the shapes of the peaks sharply outlined against the brightening sky.

The Harvest Moon is the full moon nearest the #AutumnEquinox. In 2026 it falls on 26 September. In Gaelic lore it was “Gealach an abachaidh”, the ripening moon, believed to ripen crops, and “Gealach bhuidhe nam broc”, the badgers’ yellow moon, when badgers gathered winter stores.
