Whenever I visit, always struck by the disjunction between "Washington" the synecdoche for US empire and "Washington" the beautiful city for the people, just packed with public good and beauty, a promise to be something better. It's good to be upset about the latter's destruction.

Hey yeah, friendly reminder that men denying or minimizing the work of women and taking credit for it themselves happens so much we have a NAME for it. (It’s the Matilda Effect.) 2nd fun fact: I’ve written many bios of women in STEM at this point and this is *always a factor in their history*

Yep. Same for how people think Fox News "turned their friends/family mean & stupid." Sorry, but Fox News wasn't exactly subtle. If your loved ones were watching that stuff uncritically in the first place... I got bad news for you. It's not Fox News that made them like that. : /

Great thread: social media didn’t do much connect cranks with each other; it made formerly hidden cranks visible. The shock has been the realization that our relatives, friends, neighbors, and employers turned out to be cranks at a rate we couldn’t possibly have imagined before.

The grave has been dug. WB's DIGGER debuts with a horrific $8M domestic and just $20M worldwide. Look, WB thought it was financing another BIRDMAN--but with the budget of a Marvel movie. This one could end the studio. Oh wait... Your move, Skydance.

Well that's a relief. City council pulled the permit for the pro-ICE movie that's not a union production, has been slipshod at best with armory and stunts, and whose private, armed security people have been menacing Livingston residents. They've been a scourge.

patient zero for whats wrong with the democrats nymag.com/intelligence...
Instead, BJ McCollister, who runs a Maine-based consulting firm called Frame Strategies and was Jackson’s chief of staff in the state senate, offered a choice of two people vetted by Schumer’s DSCC. The campaign went with Hilary Barrett, the former Nevada caucus chief for Joe Biden during the fractious showdown there between Biden and Sanders in 2020. (The campaign says it conducted an “exhaustive search” for the job that included more than two candidates.) Other consultants came from BerlinRosen, Hilltop Public solutions, and TKO, all powerful Washington- and New York–based firms strongly aligned with the Democratic Establishment. These firms had also been involved in Jackson’s gubernatorial efforts, but now they were in the driver’s seat. The Jackson campaign’s wariness of in-person events seems to merge with a general suspicion of Mainers and their conviction that they know what’s best for Jackson. A handful of them who work as staffers at this point “are treated like garbage” by the campaign bosses, according to one source. What’s more, this person went on, “in their mind, Troy is lumped in with them. There’s a vision of Maine that these folks have.” Multiple sources said campaign managers turned up their noses at some of the hokier events on his schedule, including a boisterous karaoke night and a contra dance on Labor Day weekend. “They think it’s going well when Troy is boring AF,” said another person with knowledge of the campaign. Karaoke, held at Baxter Brewing Co. in Lewiston, “was a blast,” according to one attendant, packed with people who were Jackson’s delegates or organizers. “Troy was on fire, and he was just himself again.” Members of the Washington contingent, according to multiple people present, hung out on a couch by themselves and left after about half an hour.

Another source familiar with the campaign said, “I don’t even think it’s disdain for Maine so much as it’s just disdain for, more generally, people. They want to run this campaign through numbers and spreadsheets. And wherever a campaign is connecting with people or doing anything quirky or unique, they’re like, ‘This is bad and weird.’”

FUN FACT: The next president could order a CFIUS review of the $24B(+) Saudi, Qatari, Abu Dhabi investments in the Ellison deal – yes, post merger – which in turn could lead to the president requiring those investments be unwound. Of course, that'd be followed by litigation – but hey, Article II.

"This election is about the threat of trans kids" is the worst possible messaging for Dems yet so many candidates are leaning into it. No voter will flip R->D over it. Low-info voters read this as "you're focused on bullshit that doesn't affect me" while the base reads this as "you're an asshole."
