Today is #MexicanIndependenceDay, commemorating the date in 1810 when Roman Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang the bells at his church and issued the Cry of Dolores, which called for independence from Spain. Mexican independence would not be secured until 1821.

#OnThisDay in 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech at the March on Washington. His speech inspired a nation to confront its long history of racial inequality and make good on the promises set forth in the Declaration.

#OnThisDay in 1776, the Battle of Long Island, or the Battle of Brooklyn Heights, was fought in New York. Col. Jonathan Pettibone carried this sword, on view at the Museum, when he commanded the 18th Connecticut Militia Regiment, who could hear cannon and gun fire from their position in Manhattan.
