Hell yeah. This game feels like when your favorite experimental musician suddenly puts out a polished, hi-fi art-pop album, and after the initial shock you find that it’s just as good if not better than their low-fi work. This game is still as original, strange, and challenging as much of his previous work, but this level of polish and scope seems novel for him, and he wears it well.

i designed a very simple slot machine for my stream and it turns out that it's actually really easy to design something compellingly opaque that feels like winning but is actually losing. and you just design 100 of those on top of each other. Balatro does none of that.

if anything Balatro turned me off because the RNG was *too* obvious. I could envision the next 50 hours of playing it and instead of doing that I just quit, because I didn't find it satisfying. It never really tries to hook people in the way that real slot machines do.
