After conservationists reintroduced a family of beavers into a nearby city park, the animals built dams and restored wetlands that now absorb and slow floodwater naturally. 6442591360

alexander @varney.me · 21/02/2026This is a slightly different problem but it speak to the news orgs wanting to push their own direct subscription over any other model even when it doesn’t make sense to consumers. 100
alexander @varney.me · 21/02/2026Maybe one day the market dynamics will align to make this a possibility. For now I’m pretty happy paying $15/mo for Apple News+, but nobody offers a way to “open article in Apple” when you go to a website with a paywall, even if you’ve already paid thru News+. Super frustrating! 220

alexander @varney.me · 21/02/2026Thanks for the share, I think the cause is just that everyone wants recurring revenue. I won’t give random local paper in another country $10 a month forever to read a single article, but I would pay to get past the paywall once. Stripe taking 30c of the transaction is irrelevant. 110
alexander @varney.me · 21/02/2026Something I’ve been thinking about… do you think there’s a model where we can pay about $4 per article? IMO anything under a fiver is basically free as a one time cost but the hassle of a subscription is too much friction for a single article 100

alexander @varney.me · 30/12/2025Fair, and TO should definitely do congestion pricing, toll the gardiner (rip to that idea), and generally make driving alternatives better. I do think there is an inevitability that randomly closing lanes will create bottlenecks, and letting construction companies close lanes for years is bad too. 020
alexander @varney.me · 30/12/2025This is a single sentence in an article about a city job being filled and the linked article in the section you highlighted is very balanced and includes a bunch of useful context around road closures and presents the pro-development side.
