In my case, there are so many comics I've drawn where I wouldn't have been able to pull them off if I hadn't used reference. Here's one that comes to mind:

Hello, #PortfolioDay! I'm Deadkat, a French pixelartist mostly working with mixed media (3D+pixelart) and very limited palettes (usually 4 or 5 colours)! I use shaders to add neat effects to my art too! Oh, and I have a website now :) deadkat.art

This reminded me about another fun fact, but about myself this time, but I used to speak French at a fairly basic level (A* at my GCSEs) and I speak a tiny bit of German I'm naturally not gifted at languages, and British schools are very bad at teaching them, but I hope to speak German well one day

Fun fact about this piece. I first modeled a basic 3D scene in Blender, and animated a light to use as reference, which also meant that I needed an Anfor stand-in. So my solution was to take a model of a person and slap a beak on it XD

One of the frames I used as reference for the light's movement. It is a non-textured 3D basic scene, with a 3D person sitting on a chair, with a crude representation of a beak placed over the face.

'reference is cheating' is the most bananas art conspiracy theory out there. A lot of the people you might consider masters were not just using a reference for a pose or something, they were setting up the whole damn scene and almost copying it.

i think horror is about the violation of a boundary. the body, a building, nature, the family. what should be safe, innocent, delineated, and final, instead invert and corrupt. the fear of being violated and the fear of being the violator, of what if you trespassed, became unwelcome.
