The EHRC are stupid enough to do a blow-by-blow repeat of their previous shenanigans. I say: Yes, please do this - launch a deep investigation. Do it when our fugee-hunting Home Secretary is on TV, while Jeremy Vine asks callers whether black people can be British, while fascists riot in the street.

I invite you do notice what *doesn’t* cross a very significant red line. Genocide isn’t even nearly a deal-breaker, politicians can fly out to have their photos taken grinning next to the Israeli PM without a peep. It’s not fully adopting the policies, rhetoric and optics of then National Front.

Note: That is not, in fact, what socialism is. However, this may be one of the more revealing political moments of the past decade: a leading politician openly acknowledging efforts to redefine a political term based on contemporary political rhetoric, as opposed to its original/historic meaning.

Some fascinating detail that I wasn’t aware of in the long process of abolishing slavery (from David Olusoga’s excellent Black and British)
Wilberforce went on to introduce bills for the general abolition of the slave trade every year between 1794 and 1799. They were all voted down. Despite huge public agitation and the continuing growth of the abolitionist movement the issue of slavery rarely dominated the attention of parliamentarians: The wars with France, poor harvests, widespread distress among the poor and a rebellion in Ireland made it increasingly difficult for Clarkson, Wilberforce and their allies to keep the abuses of the slave-traders at the forefront of MPs' minds - despite the constant barrage of new abolitionist pamphlets and the constant drumbeat of mass public meetings and fiery speeches. Yet the bill of 1796 failed by only four votes after one group of pro-abolition MPs went to the opera and missed the vote. There were rumours that the performance of the comic opera The Two Hunchbacks that had drawn the lawmakers away from the chamber had been arranged by the supporters of the slave trade.

Kemi Badenoch wants to exempt the family home from inheritance tax. But that creates a perverse incentive for elderly people to *upsize* to save IHT. That could double the cost of the policy, and push £100bn+ from savings into housing. A 🧵 on bad tax cuts.
