Cillian Murphy's a legend. He won an Oscar for a monster hit Christopher Nolan movie and used that clout to make downer dramas about Magdalane laundries and reform schools.

One thing I really loved about The Secret Agent is that Wagner Moura is clearly incredibly hot and the movie simply acknowledges it. Felt far more accurate to real life than what Hollywood does-Pretend the actor isnt gorgeous or beat us over the head with it ala Nicole Kidman in Big Little Lies.

Evening viewing recommendation? Watch Joachim Trier's supernatural thriller THELMA (2017). Something like Brian De Palma's CARRIE filtered through a distinctively chilly, Nordic sensibility, Trier's film follows a lonely young woman whose repression is the result of a strict religious upbringing.

Some of you are grinding or suffering anxiety because you're not going to make your self-imposed New Years deadline on your manuscript. Stop. Take a deep breath. Targets motivate you to get the words out, but the minute that motivation feels bad is when it poisons the well. Finish when you finish.

Also, if "cultural impact" is just semantics for "franchise saturation", then yes, the Avatar movies have not Muppet Babies themselves into overexposed dilution.

I don't care about Avatar but that doesn't mean I believe the world doesn't care. Just because YOU don't like or ingest something doesn't mean it has no "cultural impact." I don't watch any Real Housewives but I can damn sure say they've made an impact on culture, even if I don't experience that.
