Dynamic instability of the Wilkes Subglacial Basin Ice Sheet, East Antarctica
Nature Reviews Earth & Environment, Published online: 30 September 2026; doi:10.1038/s43017-026-00827-6The Wilkes Subglacial Basin is a marine-based sector of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet that is vulnerable to ocean-forced melting and climate warming. This Review assesses changes in ice-sheet extent in the Wilkes Subglacial Basin under past and projected warming and notes large uncertainties in temperature-related and climate-related thresholds for its major retreat.

Yes, Arctic wildfires are ‘new’, and sadly they form a positive feedback with climate change. Increasing wildfire activity is increasing the vulnerability of permafrost to thaw, accelerating the release of long-stored greenhouse gases. This is a feature, not a glitch, of the Anthropocene. 🔥📈🔥

I am pleased to share our new paper in which we review the current distribution of surging glaciers in Svalbard! Published in Earth Science Reviews, you can find the full paper here: The surging Borebreen in 2024. In this review, we analyse the methods use to detect glacier surges in the past and present using remote sensing techniques, geophysical methods, and palaeo-glaciological analysis such as landforms, historical imagery and archival maps.

Glacier surging and surge-related hazards in a changing climate
Nature Reviews Earth & Environment, Published online: 12 February 2026; doi:10.1038/s43017-025-00757-9Glacier surges are rapid ice flow acceleration and mass transport events, which can threaten nearby communities, infrastructure and habitats. This Review discusses the global distribution, behaviour and associated hazards of glaciers that are prone to surging and how these are being affected by climate change.
