Fresh off the press: KryoMon.AT Report Nr. 2 is out. ❄️ The new KryoMon.AT report (2022/23 & 2023/24) pulls together the national picture on glaciers, snow, lake ice – and permafrost, where GEORESEARCH contributed long-term borehole data from our Open-Air-Lab Kitzsteinhorn.

From a summer storm to 2 million m³ of shifting debris. ⛈️ The #Sattelkar is a striking example of how our changing climate reshapes high-alpine terrain. Our 2025 interim #research report provides fresh data on this 19-hectare active landslide system and its evolving dynamics.

🚠 Can a cable car help map snow distribution with centimetre precision? Yes — and it could transform how we monitor snow in alpine regions.

Sensor system mounted on the gondola, with the GNSS antenna on the roof and the IMU and lidar at the front of the gondola. The axes represent the orientation of the coordinate system, with the -axis aligned with the gondola’s forward direction. During the gondola’s ascent and/or descent, point cloud data is collected and subsequently post-processed.

Last Thursday – just a few hours before a cold front brought 20 cm of fresh snow – our team climbed into the remote, hard-to-access #Sattelkar cirque (Obersulzbachtal, Hohe Tauern National Park) to collect water-isotope samples and retrieve ground-temperature sensor data.
