Route to future recreation in the forbidden region.
figure labeled COMPLEX VELOCITY SPACE

The plane shows a 'physical region' on the horizontal axis with hatch marks between -c and +c (speed of light).

On the positive axis, a dark line moves towards +c, hops over it, and then swirls around in a calligraphic flourish. The flourish has an arrow pointing downwards with text below reading "Rout to future recreation in the forbidden region."

This is shocking to hear! Einstein kept a picture of Maxwell on his office wall and admired him more than any other scientist. Every fall I teach a whole course about his work. This is like hearing that Westminster Abbey might be purchased so a new car rental place can built on Newton’s grave.

To explain the situation: Discord gave me until tomorrow to remove the need for my bot to read message content (saying I could achieve the bot feature with slash commands/interactioms instead) I refactored the bot to use slash commands In the process I fixed a bug that needed the Manage Roles

Pushed some breaking changes but things would have broken anyways if I HADN'T pushed anything. Maybe that's the moral of the story sometimes? Better to do the thing and make mistakes than to not do the thing and knowingly let things break?

Joan Clarke: the lone female cryptanalyst in Alan Turing’s inner circle. A math genius denied her Cambridge degree for being a woman, she mastered "Banburismus" to crack Nazi U-boat Enigma keys, saving thousands of Allied lives in the Battle of the Atlantic. Died #OTD in 1996. #WomenInSTEM #WWII
A studio portrait of British cryptanalyst and codebreaker Joan Clarke (1917–1996), celebrated for her elite mathematical role in Alan Turing's inner circle at Bletchley Park during World War II. The overall composition captures Clarke from the chest up in a left-facing side profile, with her head turned toward the viewer. She looks directly at the camera with a calm, intelligent, and subtly smiling expression. She has short, darkly styled curly hair arranged in voluminous waves. She wears round, thin-framed wire glasses, dark lipstick, and a formal military or institutional uniform jacket featuring lapels, buttons, a collared shirt, and a dark necktie beneath. Stitched onto her upper sleeve is an insignia consisting of a white spread-winged bird patch above two parallel chevron stripes. The setting is a minimalist studio background with a neutral, soft gradient gray tone. The clear lighting emphasizes the historic, dignified, and determined mood of a pioneering wartime mathematician.

Decimal registers, decimal assembly language, graphite-rubber memory... the CARDIAC was a different kind of computer in more than one way.
The Cardiac - "CARDboard Illustrative Aid to Computation", a blue cardboard computer resembling a calculator wheel. Device left is the output strip. In the left half is the 'accumulator', which is altered by three cardboard strips; a flowchart gives instructions on how to interpret the 'command' at any given step. On the right half is the memory, which is able to be written to by the human operator's pencil; to the left of each slot is a space for the operator to put a 'bug' which acts as the instruction pointer

When Jim Henson was first starting out, he had a little five-minute live show called Sam and Friends, aired in Washington DC and later Baltimore. Very few of these survive visually now.

They were primitive and simple, to the point where they're strange to watch. This was twenty years before The Muppet Show. They didn't have voices at first, and were often mimed to musical records.

It was his way of getting on television, and he wasn't completely serious about puppetry as an art form until he'd been doing this for a couple of years.

Maybe that would be a Youtube show now. Just a little stepping stone, the first step in his much larger career.

But here's the thing: While doing that show, Jim Henson bought two fancy cars and a two-story house with a studio floor. He got married, had children, traveled the world. He started building his business. He established relationships at NBC and with the puppeteering community.

Sam and Friends was his first step. People used to get paid for that first step, in a way that would allow them to take further steps.

Maybe that would be a Youtube show now. He wouldn't get paid for it, not more than pocket change anyway. And he wouldn't have a pathway to a further career from there.

I grew up inspired by Jim Henson. I took my first steps into filmmaking in high school, doing comedy and puppets and animation and all sorts of creative things. But for someone my age, it was hard to translate that into money. It was impossible, without generational money, to break into mainstream Hollywood, even after film school in Los Angeles. I'm 45 now and doing lots of interesting things, but moneywise I'm still stuck at that first step.

There's lots of talent out there, and most of that talent doesn't have the money to show what they can really do.

We miss the great creatives when they pass away. If you want the next (great creative), fund the arts.
