Scientists discover immune cell ‘traffic jam’ that can help breast cancer spread to the lungs

What was the aim?

The researchers wanted to understand how breast cancer spreads to the lungs, focusing on the role of immune cells called neutrophils.

They studied what happens in the lungs before tumours form, to see whether changes in these immune cells could make it easier for breast cancer cells to settle and grow in this organ. What did they find?

They discovered that neutrophils build up in the lung’s narrow blood vessels and move very slowly, creating a “traffic jam”.

This slows down cancer cells travelling through the bloodstream, causing them to get stuck in the lungs. When the researchers used a treatment to get neutrophils moving again, fewer tumours formed in the lungs of mice. What does this mean?

This research reveals a new way that breast cancer can spread, and highlights neutrophils as a potential target to help prevent metastasis.

While still at an early stage, these findings could lead to new approaches that stop cancer cells from settling in the lungs, helping reduce the risk of secondary breast cancer in the future.
