I got as many dates on there in 2015-2016 Minneapolis as I could reasonably schedule. At least two a week. Women were aggressively pursuing me like Bertie Wooster. I seldom had to message first. 5'8" and balding, making 30k a year, upfront about all of it in my profile. What a time.

I have now purchased two different books from Amazon with serious OCR transcription errors that could be caught by even skimming the text. I don't know how they get away with just not trying to this degree. My fault for opting into the Kindle ecosystem, I guess.

I replied to someone on Tumblr who posted about how they're put off by labels like "grimdark" and "cozy" in fiction, and I decided that this rant should probably get a bit more daylight than it will see as a Tumblr comment.

It's bad because it takes the book's emotional and tonal qualities, which should be very strictly a matter of art, and packages them as product. It's fine for genre to market books based on whether they have wizards and elves in them, or robots and spaceships, but it's crass to buy and sell a book based on how hard it spams a particular emotional beat. OK maybe I'm talking out my ass because we've had tragedy and comedy for as long as genre has existed. Also whoops, wrong account.

It also feels like the TV Tropesification of media consumption encouraging artists to cater to narrower and narrower niches so that readers can always get exactly what they expect and never have their comfort zone challenged or even feel any emotion they didn't ask for. It's the same mentality as tech CEOs saying that one day you'll be able to switch on Netflix and watch AI shows that were formulated only for you and fitted exactly to your tastes. It's about having what you already know and feel comfortable with regurgitated at you over and over forever in some vain hope of re-experiencing what it was like to read Harry Potter for the first time.

If you use AI to make visuals, it won't match what's in your head. You'll have to look at an image that's not quite what you want, and say "good enough" at some point. That's true of your human artistic limitations too, but with AI your limitations are the same as everyone else's who uses AI.

I don't browse Youtube much but I can tell it's broken because when you search for covers of any song it returns maybe two covers and then a bunch of other songs by the original band. I know there should be at least 50 midwestern ukulele covers of Roots Radical but Youtube refuses to serve them up.
