Species at Risk in the Greenbelt - Successes, Challenges and Opportunities - Page 1
THIS REPORT PROVIDES AN IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS OF THE STATUS AND TRENDS of Species at Risk (SAR) within Ontario’s Greenbelt. Using data from 2004 to 2025, the report examines changes in SAR numbers, species type and conservation status, revealing that the Greenbelt hosts a disproportionately high number of at-risk species relative to its size. Through case studies of the hooded warbler, redside dace, and Jefferson salamander, it highlights both recovery successes and ongoing threats. The analysis underscores the Greenbelt’s crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and ecological connectivity across southern Ontario. Finally, the report presents targeted recommendations to strengthen Greenbelt protections, restore degraded habitats, enhance monitoring and promote collaboration among governments, Indigenous Nations and and other sectors to ensure the long-term survival of species and the ecosystems they sustain.
