Parliament Hill walled off to Canadians and Orcas with U.S. influences allowed inside. Our Federal Government is far more strict on regulating Canadian workers than it is on regulating (in a non-binding way) U.S. AI data centres in Canada. One would assume from this approach that the Federal Government thinks a U.S. invasion will come in the form of Orcas, healthy lungs, and Canadian workers.

A little time to breathe, move and reset

Caring deeply about our planet can be inspiring, but it can also be tiring. We know that many people in our community experience climate anxiety, grief and stress, and after a topsy-turvy summer, this feels like a good time to make a little space for self-care.

As a thank you to everyone who shares our commitment to bringing nature to the centre of society, Sierra Club Canada is offering a free virtual wellness workshop on Tuesday, September 22.

Sheila will guide us through gentle, nature-inspired yoga and QiGong flows in a hopeful, positive and supportive space. Whether you’re stiff, sore, tired, stressed or anxious; have a regular practice and could use a top-up; or have never tried yoga or QiGong before, you are welcome.

Choose from two Zoom sessions:
12:00–12:45 p.m. ET
7:00–8:00 p.m. ET

No experience is needed, and you won’t have to get up and down from the floor. Simply bring a sturdy chair, comfortable clothes, a water bottle and find a quiet space where you can take a little time for yourself.

'Excess profits tax on oil and gas receives majority support from all regions with Albertans supporting the measure by a margin of 56% to 37%.' - The Energy Mix.

The Centre for Future Work has detailed why we need a excess profits tax on oil and gas corporations - not a gas tax holiday pause that simply allows oil and gas corporations to raise prices by the difference and take the benefit from the consumer while government gives up vital revenue. See their new report: Extending Gas Tax Holiday Won’t Fix Fossil Fuel Inflation: https://centreforfuturework.ca/2026/09/02/extending-gas-tax-holiday-wont-fix-fossil-fuel-inflation/

"Canadian gasoline and diesel prices are higher now than they were before the tax holiday came into effect (and have been higher through most of the 18 weeks since it began). The full value of the tax holiday (to fuel consumers) has thus been more than offset by continued increases in the cost of petroleum products."

'Our Federal Government needs to be ready to utilize measures including an export tax on oil and gas to the U.S. which has very strong support in the Prairies. It also must undo the U.S.-style deregulation that happened.' #CDNpoli #Tariffs #Trade
Our Federal Government - even before the last minute demands from the U.S. that collapsed the trade deal on Friday - was ready to accept a deal that would have severely undermined Canada's sovereignty, as Adam Radwanski writes in the Toronto Star (see Donald Trump’s negotiators saved Canada from making a big mistake).

Worse, it appears some of the motivation to get the deal done (when a 'deal' was never truly possible in the first place) was to remove obstacles to the potential upcoming sale of Canadian public assets (like airports), to investors (including U.S. investors). Privatization that - if it happens - will cost Canadians as it has cost the UK public while worsening services and environmental health.

The potential digital sovereignty ramifications of the initial deal alone were terrible, set the precedent for more erosion, and come after a whole list of previous concessions and attempts at appeasement that clearly did not work. What did our Energy Minister get from offering to support U.S. energy dominance via oil and gas? Nothing, yet the Federal "Plan A" regarding energy has still not changed he says - but it should. It is arguably public pressure that kept our government from giving up even more.

The Federal Government must stop listening to wealthy interests in Canada who are clearly undermining our sovereignty and democracy. After all the impact of U.S. tariffs in the U.S. has been to transfer "billions from working Americans to big corporations and the rich," as CBC notes. The U.S. Government's goal is for Canada to become an oligarchy as well - even if they never formally make us a state.

In fighting back we need to also undo damage that has already been done by the approach J.D. Vance clearly outlined in a recording leaked to the Canadian Press:

"'And the whole point of this is to change Canada’s behaviour,' Vance said. 'Which they, you know, not entirely, but they’ve certainly shifted in a Trumpian direction.'”

Send an updated message to the PM here: www.sierraclub.ca/action-item/... Remember: Greenland will be under immense pressure from the U.S. Administration to allow oil drilling - and enthusiasm for that drilling by Canadian corporations only adds to that pressure. #CDNpoli #Greenland #QCpoli #ABpoli
Update August 14th, 2026: the shipment from Canada scheduled for September 12th is uncertain after Canadian companies walked back their plans following public pressure. They have now claimed they will not take any actions without approval by Greenland’s Government. As far as we can tell the Québec-based shipping company did not – and still does not – even have permission to land in Greenland despite previously confirming a booking.

It is still vital the Canadian Government ensure these corporations and any others – act only in accordance with the wishes of Greenland’s Government in the future and that public vigilance of these corporations continue. The Canadian Government must not allow Canadian corporations and Canadian ports to play a role in helping the U.S. and U.S. corporations force oil exploration and drilling onto Greenland.
