Spittoon Poetry Night @ Comedy Citadel, 8:00. It’s a great line up, and Edward Ragg is going to give a rare reading in support of his new book. Definitely worth turning up for. (In Beijing)

This was waiting at the post office for me when I got back from Tibet. As a long time fan of his work, I am looking forward to seeing what @derekbeaulieu.bsky.social has to say about the state of things. The chapter heading "There are No Winners and No Losers" has me very optimistic.

Really happy to read with everyone from the Inkwell 100 poems summer challenge last night in Shanghai and to have one of my poems in the Inkwell Summer 2026 Poetry Rush zine.
A group photo of 19 poets on the stage at a nightclub in Shanghai.Dante Alighieri

	— […] it is impossible to arrive at the other senses, especially the allegorical, without first arriving at the literal.

You can go up the mountain
a million times
and not once see
a burning bush.
That’s how it is
when you go looking for things.
I was 700 pages
into Infinite Jest
before I realized
I liked it as a project,
but hated it as a book.
So the next time
you’re out there on high,
maybe give a listen
to the blackthroat’s song,
as she tells you
everything is just fine.

"Dante’s quote is telling us we need to understand the literal meaning of something before we can understand it in other ways, so I open with something that, of course, isn’t meant to be taken literally. Infinite Jest is a red herring or an example depending on how you choose to read it. The blackthroat is an extremely rare songbird that lives in high altitudes: if you hear one singing, you should drop what you’re doing and appreciate that moment."
Cover of the Inkwell Summer 2026 Poetry Rush zine. There is a simple black and white line image of scroll pinned to a laundry line and the word Inkwell written large above it. The words "summer 2026 poetry rush" are written smaller on the scroll. The words" one hundred days, one hundred poems challenge" are written small just above the laundry line.

I am such a Kyla Houbolt fan. This came in the mail today. Deft poems that defy location. Each place feels familiar until it's all wrong. Kyla has done something really good here.
How to Spell a Prayer

for the love of the deeps
let the edge hold,
he hopes.

Very happy to have a poem from my Commonplace project in the issue of The Inkwellian (out of Nanjing). The theme for the issue was fire.
Moses Maimonides

— You should not think these great secrets are fully and completely known to anyone among us. They are not.

A pearl lost in a forest fire
is similar to the one
you lost when your house
burnt down.
This is a parable
with no great meaning,
as all losses are felt,
the amputee’s phantom limb,
as it were.
I made a mental list
of all the dead
I have known.
Now, I’m really hoping
for rain.

If I started a mini-review blog for poetry 300-400 words, would you guys actually write a paragraph or two for poetry books you're reading? Two paragraphs, wouldn't need deep insights., just initial ideas, and ideas about craft.

Upfromsumdirt mentioned his old Blogger page. I looked up my old page I'm sure I deleted in the 2010s; it's still there. I can add to it, it's not frozen. The old stuff is an archive, but if they're going to keep giving me a free web addy and storage, I'm thinking I should use this for something.

In the intro, it says Philip Levine went out of his way to sabotage Coulette's Collected which came out AFTER HE WAS DEAD. That seems a real dick move and petty. Can anyone fill me in to the story behind that? There's got to be something more to this, right?

So, coming down to the wire here, Mapless will be released on July 17th! Many thanks to @tomsnarsky.bsky.social for the advance praise for this collection.
Cover image of Mapless and text of this blurb:

The first sleight-of-hand I ever learned was how to make a toothpick disappear, by way of a little piece of hidden scotch tape and some patter. Kyla Houbolt’s poems in Mapless work a similar magic: woven in & through the ordinary, they are possessed of a guileless voice whose levity and directness of address belie the book’s sly treatment of serious themes, too, from alcoholism and climate change to intractable political gridlock and the “horrible numbers” we live with daily. Houbolt’s poems harness the imagination hopefully, carving out a collectivity however flawed it, or we, might be: “We’re all magical trailer trash / setting the world to rights / or on fire, / whichever comes first.” I love being in the ambit of Houbolt’s “we” — even if the tape unsticks and the trick fails, there’ll always be sunlight.
