this is a very thoughtful and nuanced piece. i think this paragraph is especially important to keep in mind. a lot of people are talking about geller as if he has spent the last ten years doing his best to atone for what he did, or asking if ten years of "good work" can outweigh one rape.
Regardless of whether or not you believe that rapists should not have to disclose their histories of sexual violence to their co-workers, I don't think Geller should have agreed to collaborate with me - especially for a video about James Franco - knowing that I've often written about living as a survivor of sexual violence (which I assume he knew because he knew of me and it was the subject of my most popular essay). I feel as though I was a small link in a larger chain of survivors used - deliberately or not - as props in a greater project of image rehabilitation. Every collaboration Geller did with an outspoken victim of sexual assault helped to legitimize his public image, and it seems none of us were given the choice of making an informed decision whether or not to support that project. While it's possible that Geller has deconstructed, his actions don't align with the argument that he's spent the last decade "accounting."

Blue collar work is skilled and vital. It destroys your body with remarkable speed. I come from an HVAC family. My brother dropped out of college shy of his mechanical engineering degree because, quote, "I was 22, knew everything, and wanted money". Now he's 41, stuck, and in constant pain.

To be clear, that term, ‘sell out/selling out’, can/is used to discredit artists but I can’t see how the actions over the last couple weeks wouldn’t be quintessential sell out behavior While that has been quite obvious, I never thought about him or his music enough to care one way or the other

The more that’s come out about Ed Sheeran and his efforts to avoid anything political makes it rather difficult to not label the entirety of his public persona + music as this Frankenstein synthesis of sell out. He’s the final boss of selling out.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

This is the dodgiest and most-desperate thing I’ve seen in the bubble so far. Amazon selling their chips to a group of investors and leasing them back - an off balance sheet arrangement done in plain sight. Really scraping the bottom of the barrel here. And they’ll probably buy more!
Amazon is seeking to offload about $8bn of advanced Nvidia chips to external investors through a new vehicle aimed at strengthening its balance sheet, according to people familiar with the matter.
The Seattle-based cloud giant has held talks with investors in recent weeks to gauge interest in the deal, which would allow the company to spin off thousands of Grace Blackwell chips it is deploying in data centres across the US into a special-purpose vehicle.
Amazon will then lease the advanced AI chips back from the SPV, which would tap outside investors through debt issuance. By unloading the expensive semiconductors to investors, the company could adopt a more asset-light approach to its balance sheet.

paywalls fund journalism and everything reported behind a paywall is aggregated and turned into vertical video that reach many orders of magnitude more people than the original article ever would have. this is not actually a problem and shaming sites that have paywalls means less reporting not more
