Thing about Badenoch is her immense self-confidence does communicate itself to voters and is one reason her ratings have improved. But you've got to think during a campaign more people would notice it is entirely unjustified.

RIP Jeffrey Archer, not a day goes by when I don't think about the judge in his 1987 libel case (which Archer "won" by doing a bunch of perjury) summing up for the jury by going "would a guilty man have such a hot wife". one of the most insane legal moments of all time

£10bn to be operational by the end of the first term is a hilarious bit of 'how much?' both in a "ten billion is a lot of money" sense and a "ten billion is not going to get you this in five years' sense.

Call me old-fashioned, but I just think that if you are announcing £10bn of spending, then if the Shadow Treasury team and the leader's office are doing their jobs properly, the leader should have clearer answers to these questions:

these portraits are so intriguing. how does this man have £200,000 in savings. why is he so interested in war. why can't he remember how he voted in 2024. how does he square his enthusiastic support for Kemi Badenoch with his support for trans rights.

I just really struggle to take her seriously when she does things like this. The combination of belligerence. and not being on top of the detail just disqualifies her from the job she is seeking.

The Conservative Party have a really good theory on *why* they might win, which they are mistaking both for “we are currently winning” and “we have a strategy to maximise our chances”:

Just discovered this stunning short story in my drafts
"I'm pregnant!" shouts Jonathan
Franzen's wife. He places a finger on her lips. "No, it is I who am pregnant," he says. "Pregnant with the next great American novel." He walks into the backyard and places a single portobello mushroom upon the grill.

votes rarely ever port 100% directly from one party to another in runoffs, so it's not really as easy as just adding them on directly

Lula was 5 points ahead in the first round in 2022 and only won by 2 in the runoff, and was tied or behind in runoff polls that had him ahead in the first round this year. If he's losing by 3-4pts in the first round, he's almost certainly losing the runoff.

I'm not sure that's the lesson of Lula, per se, given he has an actual record of winning and a huge following

Tyron @tyron.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The thing I don't like is that Lula only has a narrow lead for first round, when he won it by five points in 2022. And I'm wondering if that many votes have likely shifted that that's still enough to win the second round if he only won that by ~2 in 2026. Flavio Bolsonaro win looks v possible

First round of Brazilian elections today - fingers crossed for Lula over the fash son of Bolsonaro who wants to pardon his dad. Polls projecting narrow Lula lead in first round, but complete neck and neck toss-up in the runoff in three weeks time.

It’s all well and good wanting a big 10 year picture as every PM has wanted to do but you need to actually govern the country that exists right now to make it to the 10 years. I do rate Burnham as a politician he’s been impressive recently, but the un-reality of economic/fiscal strategy is worrying.

Labour have had about half a dozen opportunities to go “it’s tough times, we need to change tact from the manifesto we wrote in 2024”, and every single time they’ve opted for the shortest of short term gains. Governing like they only want one term while most of their policy platform requires two.
