You don't actually need to run the CNC router yourself, you can just type "sudo ikea install kallax", and then like, five more things on the command line to assemble it. Or you can get it from the ppa or the AppImage or the Snap or the FlatPak. It's pretty simple, really.

Yay, we're doing quizzes. Welcome to LiveJournal! I think the little Midwestern I have in my PNW English comes from my mom via my grandpa. But there are quirks in my idiolect that the quiz doesn't catch, like the middle syllable in "tomato" rhymes with hat, and "cómoda" instead of dresser.

There's also an entirely nonmetaphysical karma factor. People with privilege treat their surroundings with the expectation that they will comply. This does not work with Nature.

Goodie huts still exist. On the plus side, they've gotten a lot better about representing indigenous peoples as playable civs, and even work with tribal representatives to make sure they get details right. But yeah, it's still a game where the map starts as terra nullius and you gobble that up.

This is some of the best historical fantasy out there. (It's a secondary world Rome with magic, but the setting hews a lot closer to our own world than most "secondary world version of country X" fantasy.) And $2.97 for a whole-ass trilogy is a crazy good deal.

There are 6 ways to place 1 | and 1 – stripe on L4 through cell centers. For Z4, there are 3. Can these pieces tile a 6×6 square with continuous stripes? We're lucky: the total stripe length is a multiple of 6, & the number of crossings works. One unique tiling exists, up to symmetry. #TilingTuesday

The thing about trying to play the nativism card against Trump is that Trump is kicking out brown people, and you're just trying to kick out some beef. There are a lot more bigot voters than there are specifically rancher bigot voters, so I don't see how you can win here.

No problem, put the batteries in the wings, run air over them from the air that's flowing there anyway. Simple Matter of Engineering. Even with better tech that lets us speed that up, that's decades, due to the "must not fall out of the sky, even very rarely" requirement. Cars don't have that.

Alexandre Muñiz @two-star.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
The turbofan engine took over 30 years, for a part that was basically a swap-in replacement for existing engines. Battery power will require much bigger changes. Heat dissipation from batteries needs to be solved.

Alexandre Muñiz @two-star.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Once the battery energy density problem is solved, (I agree that it probably will be) an electric 737 is a Simple Matter of Engineering. Which is to say, many decades of work to ensure that there is a product that won't fall out of the sky even a little bit.

Alexandre Muñiz @two-star.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
In high density areas, this is true. But it's hard to see how, even with maximal track build out, you get to where, say, Redmond OR to Boise ID doesn't make more sense as a plane flight. And this is going to be true for a lot of city pairs in the western US.

Soft Rains Day. "Today is August 4, 2026, in the city of Allendale, California. Today is Mr. Featherstone's birthday. Today is the anniversary of Tilita's marriage. Insurance is payable, as are the water, gas, and light bills." RIP Ray Bradbury, 1920-2012
There Will Come Soft Rains
By: Ray Bradbury

In the living room the voice-clock sang, Tick-tock, seven o'clock, time to get up, time to get up, seven o 'clock! as if it were afraid that nobody would. The morning house lay empty. The clock ticked on, repeating and repeating its sounds into the emptiness. Seven-nine, breakfast time, seven-nine!
In the kitchen the breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interior eight pieces of perfectly browned toast, eight eggs sunny side up, sixteen slices of bacon, two coffees, and two
cool glasses of milk.
"Today is August 4, 2026," said a second voice from the kitchen ceiling, "in the city of Allendale, California." It repeated the date three times for memory's sake.
"Today is Mr. Featherstone's birthday. Today is the anniversary of Tilita's marriage. Insurance is payable, as are the water, gas, and light bills."

'You'll choke too' - an aerial embroidery landscape inspired by all the wildfires happening right now... I'm upset every time I smell smoke outside and somehow we have people starting them maliciously too! But we all breathe the same air so they'll choke too (1/2 - see thread for close-ups)
An embroidery hoop containing a sewn landscape from above. It shows a forest on the right, a line of fire and charred ground with smoke on the left. The smoke is felted wool.

It can be a little hard to see what's going on here. The half-weight-tans are outlined with thick lines. There are overlapping half-weight-tans with different orientations, so it looks like there are smaller tans, but they aren't real. Here are the pieces individually, if that helps:

Alexandre Muñiz @two-star.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
There are 12 3·½ ◣, (tri-half-weight-tans) if we allow partial half-tan overlaps. They tile a full-weight 3×3 square as shown. Two pairs of pieces have the same shape. A problem where they aren't interchangeable: find another tiling that maximizes the symmetry of the tan diagonals. #TilingTuesday

Today is Venn Day, in celebration of the mathematician John Venn, born on this day in 1834. To commemorate the occasion, here’s a poem in the form of a Venn Diagram.
Poem title: At the Intersection

The poem is divided into two overlapping circles.

The left-hand circle is titled ‘me’ and the text reads:
the day we
went out to have
an ice-cream, we said nothing
just let our silence melt in
the air as we walked across the common
our love never tiring at all

The right-hand circle is titled ‘you’ and the text reads:
we should
have talked it over but
nothing ever seems to get
in your fat head. You are so
common that I wish we’d never met
at all and I’d married Tim instead

In the intersection of the poem (where the two circles overlap), the text reads:
we
have
nothing
in
common
at all

Resolving ambiguity in order of operations is easy: simply enumerate all possible parsings of a given expression, compute each value, and then average. E.g., for 9-3-3÷3, ((9−3)−3)÷3 = 1 (9−(3−3))÷3 = 3 (9−3)−(3÷3) = 5 9−(3−(3÷3)) = 7 9−((3−3)÷3) = 9 so 9-3-3÷3 = (1+3+5+7+9)/5 = 5. Voilà! 🧮
