I would rather have pronghorn antelope and bighorn sheep and elk and purple sage and four wing saltbrush than data centers and so far no one in tech has presented a compelling vision for how to have all of those things, they just seize more resources for the plagiarism engine.

The standard narrative goes that LUDDITES were foolish lunatics who, in fear of technology, decided progress was bad, and started hitting it with sticks. (But the truth is entire ways of life were being destroyed.)

Previously, skilled craftsmen were respected for the time and effort it took to do their work. The entire family usit would form a cottage industry - creating something valuable, and command a decent living. But when a machine can work 10 times faster its owner can charge less for the prodcts- craftsmen couldn't compete and were left out of work almost overnight.

And as factories became a fixture of the british landscape, these now unemployed labourers often ended up working the factories that had just destroyed their way of life. Britain was the most prosperous nation in history, factory owners became extremely wealthy and influential. But the people doing the actual work saw almost none of it.

Because the truth is, tech doesn't have an image problem. It doesn't have a message problem. It has an intention problem. What's wrong with the axe murderer who broke into my house is not that he hasn't successfully persuaded me to buy into his narrative. What's wrong is that he's trying to kill me with an axe. Similarly, when you launch a product that's designed to put millions of people out of work, block access to sources of verifiable truth, replace human creativity with slop, and lower the barriers to every sort of atrocity, the problem isn't that you haven't told the public a good story about those things. The problem is that you are trying to do them.

My chemistry teacher decided to have a pop quiz and draw a line in permanent marker on the face of any student who gave the wrong answer. When I wouldn't let him do that to me, he stomped out of the class and my classmates made me go to the teacher's lounge to apologise.

Page two, a family has taken the baby in and named him Mikhail. He bites the mother who tries to nurse him, does not speak for a long time and then quickly grows much taller than his adoptive sister, who is several years older than him....

Digitally illustrated comic pages in black and white: Page three, it becomes clear he does not fit in. He eats too much, he is feared among the village children and injures them when trying to play with them, he is not allowed to go to festivities for fear he might cause trouble. He begins to feel isolated. Page 4, he thinks back to his only true friend, his sister Sara. Always there for him, kind to him. She buys him a toy sword, cheers him up and accepts him as he reveals that his gender identity might not align with what people think.

Soon, they learn that Sara has been betrothed and is to be married and sent away. Page six, the sorrow grows. They cannot do anything to help Sara, feel alone...the memories fade into a 'now.' Mikhail stands outside in the snow, playing by themself.

Resisting, she angers him and he strikes her face. It is then that Sara spots Mikhail, who is watching all this. She is afraid and tells Mikhail to stay away, trying to protect her little sibling.

Well, this is going to be interesting. Apparently the tariffs paid can be claimed back retroactively, so...yeah. That will be bad for the USA. And of course because the counter-tariffs went through the proper channels, those are still in place and not subject out claims.

Yesterday, someone made a Dungeons & Dragons analogy for vaccines in our (Facebook) comments. I don't play or understand D&D, so I asked our Preparedness Coordinator to explain. I still don’t understand it, but he said this analogy will be understood by people who do! Anyway, please get vaccinated.

Text says "A measles vaccine analogy if you understand Dungeons & Dragons: Measles has a DC of 19 (you have an approximately 90% chance of getting measles if exposed and not vaccinated). The measles vaccine (MMR) would confer a +17 bonus to the average adventurer (CON 10), giving you a 95% chance to resist measles if you encounter the disease in your journey. (Two doses of the MMR vaccine actually = about 97% effective, but I’m told getting to 97% exactly in the game is more complicated than can be explained in a graphic.).
