in government vs in opposition
In an ABC article today, Minister Malarndirri McCarthy said the following:

"What we agreed to abolish was actually the cashless debit card, and that's what we took to the election, and that's the card we actually abolished," Minister for Indigenous Australians Malarndirri McCarthy said.

"There has always been the BasicsCard in place, we know that some forms of income management has to be there, usually through the courts, usually it's part of conditions for people either in family and domestic violence situations or in regards to legal circles."

Senator McCarthy said First Nations people had indicated at various points that they wanted to keep the BasicsCard.Senator Malarndirri McCarthy rightly called the BasicsCard "discriminatory and racist" when she condemned it during a senate debate in December 2020. She said:

"The hurt was palpable. The anger has never gone away. That sense of deep oppression, of racism, has gone on for 13 years since that Intervention, in the policy of the BasicsCard. [The community] are very passionate about the fact that income management that is forced upon them is unfair, is discriminatory and racist. The BasicsCard was imposed as an income management measure under the Northern Territory Intervention in 2007. Twelve years later there has been no evidence to show any success of the BasicsCard."Labor’s shadow social services minister Linda Burney made the following commitment to welfare recipients during the 2022 election campaign. She said:

"Our fundamental principle on the BasicsCard and the Cashless Debit Card, it should be on a voluntary basis. It’s not up to Labor or anyone else to tell them what to do. At the moment it’s compulsion and that’s not Labor’s position."

People are turning down highly-paid jobs working on H Potter related productions. They are giving up six/seven-figure sums on principle, because the money raised will be used to harm trans people, including trans children. Yet you can’t give up playing a game, watching a movie or buying a book...?

I know Calvin’s dad is already having a moment, but every terrible “outsource precious and fleeting moments with your children to tech so that you can spend more time on your work” pitch makes me think of that one strip I never really cared about as a kid, but care a lot about as an adult.
The Calvin and Hobbes strip where Calvin asks his dad to come play in the snow with him. His dad initially says no, because he has to work. Then, angry at himself, his Dad goes out to build a snowman with Calvin. As the Dad works into the night to make up for it, we see Calvin’s mum lifting him up to give one of the few, if only, kisses he ever gives his dad in the Calvin and Hobbes run. His dad is content. It’s a textless comic, and it’s lovely.

Australia declines to join statement criticising Israel for Unrwa demolition
The Albanese government has declined to sign up to an international statement expressing concern about Israel demolishing an aid agency’s headquarters.

The foreign ministers of 11 nations, including the UK, Canada and France, strongly condemned Israel for demolishing the East Jerusalem headquarters of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (Unrwa) in a joint statement issued on 28 January.

It called on Israel “to fully abide by its obligations to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip in accordance with international law”, saying current aid levels were inadequate.

Canberra was invited to join the most recent declaration, but declined the offer without an explanation, one diplomatic source told AAP.
