As of lunchtime today this EDM has now been signed by 89 MPs, including my own @grahamleadbitter.bsky.social so thank you for him for doing that. But we've still got another five hundred plus to get on board so contact your MP today.

Point is: this was never a sincere conversation to begin with, but sincere people keep falling for the talking points, and we need to stop treating the weaponisation of survivors' trauma as if it were a remotely good faith argument, rather than a cynical attack on trans people. 10/10

All they do is repeat the lie that a trauma reaction is grounds to exclude an entire demographic from public life, and we need to be challenging that idea when it arises, because it is the shorthand for so many other lies about how our society works or should work. 9/-

They won't fight to reform our misogynist family courts or get the paedophile-created pseudoscience of "parental alienation" out of custody decision-making. They won't tell you how financial services enable our economic abuse, or that we need LGBTQIA- and disability-inclusive DV services. 8/-

Whereas the reality is that abuse orgs that have been co-opted to serve the right's aims are happy to leave trans survivors in the street, and the people shouting loudest about toilets and changing rooms have little to say about the big fights survivors are in. 7/-

But of course the right (including those who call themselves feminists but have been only too eager to enable a Christofascist power base in the UK on a "better to rule in hell" basis) affect to believe that "But my trauma!" is a rhetorically unassailable point in our society. 🤔 6/

Whereas when you actually look at the discussions happening among trauma survivors of all genders, and in mental health and disability spaces, the idea of conflicting support needs is being discussed with far more depth and nuance, however imperfectly. 5/-

The right's way of thinking these days is: "It's all trauma this and snowflake that and trigger warnings everywhere; you can get anything you want by invoking trauma!" and I'm surprised this rhetorical basis for "a [cis] woman could be traumatised" isn't remarked on more. 4/-

It's a very manipulative attempt to pit what is often one group of survivors (trans people frequently being targets of GBV and domestic abuse) against another in the public sympathy stakes, and relies on a false assumption that the world drops everything to respond to someone being triggered. 3/-

It has made me increasingly angry to watch people treat "but someone could be triggered by a trans woman" being weaponised when most people having these conversations are not in the least bit interested in the actual work that is being done in the survivor sphere. 2/-

The idea we must exclude trans women from women's spaces Because A Survivor's Trauma Could Be Triggered is a massive fucking strawman, not just because trauma responses are a bad basis for legislation, but because it relies on the ignoring of survivors' actual collective voice and priorities. 1/-

“Some women might not be comfortable sharing spaces with trans women!” We settled the question of whether a majority’s personal feelings or beliefs should inhibit a minority’s rights when equality laws were introduced. And the answer is: no, that doesn’t get to happen. They have to deal with it

And despite how little the health service here gets relative to what it needs, we have so many staff and volunteers working so, so hard - I've seen the effects of that in several friends' lives these past few years. And Cancer Champions does amazing work too: www.rainbow-project.org/cancerchampi...

I read that only a third of cancer patients in NI start treatment within 62 days of a GP red flag (target: 95%). In the rest of the UK it's two thirds. And that new cancer jab's not here yet. NI really is a second-class part of the UK and that should never happen with fucking cancer of all things.

What we see here is something very common: that people treated by the media - inc the BBC - as neutral, dispassionate and reliable are actually deeply embedded in capitalism and all its myths. They are as partisan as anyone else. They sound neutral because what they say aligns with "common sense".

A few weeks ago Sinclair stood with self proclaimed neo Nazis in Bristol who waved the Union flag while chanting HH and throwing Nazi salutes. A few days later he went on to meet with Ayran Front in secret and used his platform to promote their group. Is that the "culture" people don't like?

Today, Sinclair posted a video of himself harassing a BBC videographer capturing footage of the graffiti which appeared in east Belfast after Union flags were taken down. According to him the flags were taken down because migrants who are being "brought" here don't like "our culture".

So this👇 A narrative has been made that trans people, particularly trans women, are ‘dangerous’ and need to be restricted from taking part in society. But this ‘crusade’ to remove trans people will not change the risks women face. If anything, it gives an excuse to control women even more.

I'm always saying that people in Great Britain need to pay more attention to NI for exactly this reason: sooner or later our problems always become your problems, either in the imitative sense (the Ulsterisation of Britain), or e.g. that you literally have Arlene "cash for ash" Foster in the Lords.

This is framed as a normal thing to say, and her credibility on financial matters simply assumed (even though her time in government saddled us with RHI debt), but saying "we need to tax the rich more" is explicitly framed as extremist, absurd, not serious.

I'm about to call East Belfast Carer Support (have not even had my Carer's Assessment yet; they were trying to work out who it should be done by; your own SW cannot do it but Mum was wrongly put in rehab in North instead of East Belfast so that complicates things) but if anyone has ideas email me.

They are ignoring info about Mum, about me as presumed carer (she would have care package 4x a day, but Mum has obvious but so far not formally diagnosed dementia, and does not reliably use her walker so needs more supervision, and I can't move in with her), and about the safety of the flat itself.

I don't suggest that all of our MPs are venal, self-serving people who don't care. Some are better. But generations of gravy train-riders in NI have taught their successors how to balance in that sweet spot where a mask of caring is just good enough to fool enough of the people, enough of the time.

But the other reason is that not everyone in Northern Ireland is poor and deprived. Some of us - i.e. the small number who are MPs - are living vastly more comfortable lives than everyone else, and many have an eye on becoming even moreso one day, via a peerage. They'll never rock that boat.

Everyone in Northern Ireland deserves better than the leaders we've got. One reason they don't fight Westminster more effectively on things like the inadequacy of the block grant is that it suits them for large numbers of people here to live in poverty and deprivation. It's a divide and rule tool.
