My god, the geophysics journalists' hour has really come, and now they cannot be contained:
Another possibility involves the two monsters lurking in the mantle's deepest reaches. Outlines of these objects - which are labelled with a range of clumsy scientific acronyms, but which many researchers simply refer to as "the blobs" - were spotted in the late 1970s. A highly detailed global seismic map created in 1984 left no doubt: Two continent-size masses occupy as much as 30% of the core-mantle boundary, one of them thousands of kilometres below Africa, the other under the Pacific.

The level designers excelling themselves there.
And the mantle, which makes up 84% of the planet's volume, is now known to be lined with plumes: scorching-hot columns of ascending rock that forge chains of giant volcanoes (like the Hawaiian archipelago) atop the Earth's ever-shifting crust.Screenshot from Super Mario Maker showing Mario standing on a tall pipe while nine impractically long fire bars rotate from various points within the landscape so he almost certainly can't get anywhere.

OKAY. I've thought about it, and who are we to tell her what she can be? Here for the Earth's core in all her changes.
Seismology has advanced since then. The inner core Lehman discovered not only spins around, but speeds up and slows down. A study published just this year also revealed that the core periodically changes shape.

I thought that glarey pic would be annoying so tried searching again on my phone, which I'm posting from. The picture is very different!
This time the graph shows steady growth from the early 1800s to what looks like the 1910s through late 1940s, then a long decline until an uptick around the turn of the millennium, still ongoing when the graph cuts out at 2022

BUT here's something really odd. I ran it through Google Books Ngram Viewer, which is great for adding context to questions like this, and got very different results in desktop vs mobile searches! Here's my initial desktop search, sorry for reflections muddying the pic...

PSA: a warning about Show Some Love Belfast

Posting this anonymously for personal reasons, but I feel like it’s important to say something.

If you’re a creative, performer, or freelancer in Northern Ireland—especially around Belfast—you may have come across Show Some Love Belfast. On the surface, they present themselves as a supportive, community-focused group championing local talent and inclusivity. But behind that image is a very different reality.

There’s a pattern of mistreatment, manipulation, and taking advantage of people’s work and goodwill. They regularly ask for services—photography, design, performance, event support—without proper compensation or respect. Promises are made and broken. People are pushed hard, then sidelined when they raise concerns or try to set boundaries.

Even worse, anyone who disagrees with them or questions their behavior is often met with hostility and defensiveness. I’ve seen and experienced aggressive responses simply for voicing valid concerns. It’s not a healthy or safe environment, and it certainly isn’t the community they claim to be.

I’m not trying to stir drama—just hoping this post helps others avoid being caught off guard. There are so many genuine, supportive creative spaces in NI. This, unfortunately, isn’t one of them. I’m truly disgusted by their behaviour towards those around me and in the creative sphere and I don’t want others to fall into their trap

If you’ve had a similar experience, you’re not alone. And if you’re considering working with them, please be cautious.UPDATE: The response to this post has been overwhelming. Thank you everyone for your responses. I shared this to protect other creatives and those who are in interactions with them. Too many have been used for their time and talent, faced aggression for speaking up, or seen their ideas taken—like copied merch designs sold without credit.

I do not want this thread to be a place where people share personal stories if you don’t want to as I want you to be safe and be able to remain anonymous as they are known for coming for people who speak out. However if you do feel like you need someone to talk to, my DMs are open

This isn’t drama—it’s about care. Just be cautious and trust your gut.

It may well be "learning" from people discussing this example - I tried a few different combos just now to see if it was the orange, the Sunday or the idea of church it was avoid, and got this tissue of fact and fantasy. Other search variants produced stuff about Christingle services.
Screencap of Google's AI semi-bullshit overview result for the meaning of the made-up phrase "an orange on a Sunday". It says:

The saying 'an orange on a Sunday' has a specific meaning in the context of the Orange Order, a Protestant fraternal organization. The orange, particularly on July 12th, symbolizes the Protestant identity and is used in their parades and celebrations, often referred to as "Orange Walks"

Hey #NorthernIreland people! The Rainbow Project has made an easy online tool so we can all demand that our MLAs take action for trans rights in Northern Ireland. Please share - thank you. www.rainbow-project.org/transrights/...
A bright pink graphic with the org's rainbow logo which says:

"Call to action: want to show your support for trans communities? Use our online tool to email your MLAs and tell them to stand up for trans rights and equality."

The URL is Rainbow hyphen project dot org, forward slash trans rights.Trans communities need your support and your voice now more than ever. Anti-trans groups, media personalities and politicians want us to lose hope - we won't and we can't.

Use our online tool to send an email to each of your MLAs - put in your postcode, we'll find your local politicians, and you can edit the template message that will be emailed to each of them.

It's so important that politicians know that people across Northern Ireland support trans communities and support trans rights. When you've sent an email, please share this graphic and the tool with your friends and family, and encourage them to raise their voice for trans equality.

Together we are stronger, together we win.

So although Trump is accelerating the downfall of of his country, science, and many vulnerable groups, Starmer's just fascinated that he can do all that and still bring a significant chunk of the people with him.

Just snipping this photo (credit: Kirsty Wigglesworth, Reuters) because I think it's THE Starmer photo of all time (just zoom in on that expression) and that I'm going to want to Photoshop the background out in order to replace it later.
Keir starmer stands at a modern wooden lectern labelled "SECURING OUR FUTURE". Behind him is a slightly blurred scene from a car factory, but is gazing in open-mouthed, suppressed panic at the camera, his arms flailing pointlessly at his sides.

ETSY, WHAT THE FUCK! For the record, the label is because there's a crucified skeletal Mickey Mouse art piece that is a bit too evocative of human remains for me to want people to encounter it accidentally. Which is the weirdest fucking sentence the internet has ever given me cause to type.
A screencap of Etsy trying to sell me several bizarre things it describes as "picks based on your shopping". They are a cross with a leaping Jesus attached to it only by a rainbow bungee cord, a portrait of Jesus wearing a red "I'm with Stupid" hat, and a crucified skeletal Mickey Mouse.

Timeline did a goat synchronicity! (Context was "what if Jurassic Park, but it's about people who are only there to feed their child's hunger for dinosaurs")
Screencap of a piece of timeline synchronicity in which two users, discussing Jurassic Park and Severance respectively, each post about goats. ‪

Saoirse Ní Chiaragáin says: "Enough of park workers with zero charisma. I want to see people bitching about the cost of accommodation because there is nowhere else to stay but in the resort. Queueing hours to get "fast passes". Tantrums because they got to the feeding too late and the kid didn't get to see the goat die."

The Endless Screaming account interrupts with a well-placed scream, then ArcadiaEgo says, "I genuinely thought the goats would never come up again."

Our News Letter is the oldest English-language paper still in daily publication, and it's the journalistic equivalent of a bully in the last June of his school career, frantically trying to preserve his fading relevance by assaulting anyone smaller who comes within range. Dignity, eh?

The News Letter is one of Northern Ireland's main daily newspapers, published from Monday to Saturday. It is the world's oldest English-language general daily newspaper still in publication, having first been printed in 1737.

But I think of both so often. Leveson, at the time, felt seismic. It seemed like it was really going to turn everything about the press upside down permanently. But our society is like one of those Fisher Price Weeble Wobble toys: knock it, even hard, and it'll return to its centre of gravity. 2

1. I have a thing for mercury glass. You often see it in lanterns or Christmas tree baubles, because it produces such lovely effects in combination with light, but the technique (if not the literal element of mercury) has also been used for tableware. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury...
A large pearl and silver Christmas bauble hangs in the centre of the shot, illuminated from within but also by the fairy lights on the garlanded bannister behind it. An 1850s burgundy and clear standing bowl, with an etched horizontal lozenge design around the main vessel, and the base chased with chevrons.

And in that last post I'm still talking about "people from the demographic that flag is meant to represent". I didn't grasp that feeling security because of a flag was even a thing, until - for the first time in my life - I began feeling that way about one. Difference: it's not been used hatefully.

This sparked a memory, and I looked up the Nancy Drew Files (the more "grown-up" subsequent series) covers just now. While there the men start almost equal in size to Nancy, apparently by case 19 they were like "she doesn't need a man, yeet him!"
Case 1: Secrets Can Kill. On this cover Nancy and a blond guy strike confident but pissed-off poses against a flaming car backdrop, and he's 3/4 her size.Case 3: Murder on Ice. Nancy and some dude stand on a mountainside in ski wear. Their figures are overlapped but she's nearly twice his size, and it looks like she's trying to nudge him off the cover due to the angles of her elbow and ski pole on his side.Case 17: Stay Tunes For Danger. Nancy is just off-centre against a TV studio backdrop, but framed so your eye is drawn to her, with her bright ginger hair amplified by matching text and layout elements. Just being edged off the cover is a tiny anonymous camera man.Case 18: Circle of Evil. A pensive Nancy is centred with a resort swimming pool in. The background to one side, and a night-time house with a prowler on the other. The prowler and swimmers aren't detailed enough to even know if they are men.
