A really important skill for trainees to learn is to be a “closer” of a project-that is to take it over the finish line for publication. This means doing the experiments, getting the figures/text ready for submission and being prepared to do review corrections 😀

A metal sculpture of a budding yeast cell (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) in late cell division, with a large mother cell budding off a smaller daughter cell, in my hand against a white background. The cell wall is cut away to show many complex, fluid internal structures, including the nucleus and gemstone chromosomes separating after replication, mitochondria with little internal ribbed membranes, the endoplasmic reticulum, and many more. Cell wall is steel, organelles are bronze, mitotic spindle is silver, and the gemstones are apatite, which gets its blue-green color from phosphorus--the element that forms the backbone of DNA.
