Conflating the two is neither necessary nor helpful, and we should not entertain for one second Anthropic's attempts to use the latter to justify putting in place a self-serving usage policy which operates to protect its training data

It is one thing to want to watch your own behaviour in case it bleeds across contexts. It is another thing altogether to suggest that you can be cruel - implying the infliction of suffering - to an inanimate artefact.

I’m sorry — you’re absolutely right on that point. The implication of cruelty as you say is propaganda and serves the LLM corporation distract-from-the-real-harms agenda.

I generally have different modes of conversing with my wife, other adults, my child, LLMs, and the deer in the field… but good and bad habits can slip between those modes. So while we don’t owe anything to Claude, watching our own habits is probably a good thing.

Generally you are right, it’s a tool without intellect or feelings and does not need or deserve respect. However, you don’t interact with a spade or a pen the way you interact with people or animals. But the interface with LLMs is conversation.

Once again, the greyhound industry received more funding than domestic violence services. There is no clearer indication of this governments priorities. There is plenty of luxurious spending in this budget, but it is not going to the people who are hardest hit and most pressed to the bone.

Once again it needs to be stressed that this is something happening across the board in Irish immigration- changes in practice leading to refusals that would not have occurred in previous years. We are in a very dark time for the rights of people migrating to Ireland and their families.

Greatest trick AI leaders have pulled is convincing many people—especially influential people in govt, media, and business—that their software is intelligent, independent, yet never culpable. Humans build it, humans deploy it, but no one bears responsibility for the things that happen when they do.

This is insanity. Irish Presidency's draft text of amendments to the GDPR allows training & operation of any AI without safeguards & tough legal basis (under "legitimate interest" a company claims what it is doing is OK. Up to you to find out and challenge in court). This is a free pass for US Tech.

The U.S. AI industry is being run by a batshit rationalist sex cult, and no, I am not being hyperbolic - they’re genuinely Like That:
Erin Redwing
@realizingerin
I went to an rationalist/EA Al doomer event last night with the goal of meeting someone who could calmly explain to me the argument for how they get to the conclusion that Al will kill everyone.
Because these are rationalists, I expected to find people who could lay out a serious extinction pathway, walk through the assumptions and intermediate steps, identify choke points where negative pathways could potentially be regulated, and entertain disagreement about where their assumptions might break down.
My experience was the exact opposite.
The people I spoke to seemed psychologically unable to entertain the possibility that their conclusion (that Al literally kills everyone, which was a point that many would not even budge on) might be wrong.
Their most extreme conclusion was treated as an axiom.
I had multiple people walk out of conversations with me when I questioned their inevitable extinction premise.
At one point during a panel, the moderator asked everyone in the audience who was still skeptical of Al doom to raise their hands. About half the room did. He then told all of the skeptics to leave the panel and go with one of the speakers, who would answer their questions separately. They filtered out all the skeptics, and continued the panel only with the subset who accepted their extreme position.
I genuinely felt like a heretic just for questioning whether superintelligent Al inevitably leads to the extinction of humanity, or entertaining the possibility that the future might actually turn out well.
That does not mean Al safety is fake. Obviously there are serious questions about rapidly advancing Al systems and what happens as they become much more capable. Those are exactly the conversations I went there hoping to have.
But what I encountered was an apocalyptic death cult. These people are not rational. They are deeply afraid, they reinforce that fear in one another, and they have become so emotionally committed to apocalypse

I can't resist saluting the absolute pitch perfect con that's been perpetrated on us last week or so. Net effect: Open AI and Anthropic get to delay their IPOs again cos they can't show their investors they're almost at AGI -- by - warning us they're almost at AGI. 💯 would con again.

This is a good example of how you need quite a lot of detail of how these systems *actually* work to understand what the risks are, and how over-indexing on sci-fi can lead you a bit astray on what the future looks like

But guess what? THEY are the right guys to create the kind of "AI" that will bring us utopia, so you should regulate all the other ones out of existence but don't touch them. Also, data centers and all that? Well you should know that's not the REAL risk according to them.

This man objected to my warning that apocalyptic "AI extinction" talk is corporate ploy for regulatory capture, marketing, and side stepping accountability. He said he left DeepMind, like the Anthropic "whistleblower." So lets have a brief history lesson about DeepMind's origins in doomer cults🧵
Alex Turner
@Turn_Trout
False

1. I literally quit my Google DeepMind job & lost >>$300k to call out harms regarding autonomous weapons... and extinction risk is still more important, which is why I'm speaking out + working to solve it

2. GDM does NOT want to stoke fears about extinction risks lol
