In The Pattern Room at Llanberis Slate Works by Tristan Moss
Editor's Note: This poem's spare imagery reminds the reader that even the most durable impressions of our history can also become a dusty footnote in memory.

When I look at the sun shinning through the autumn leaves, it’s hard to believe in a curator. But it’s also hard not to believe in one.

I made a dozen collages based on walking York city walls to go with a poem sequence. They didn't quite fit the text - developed their own language which wasn't that of the poems - so I dropped them. But they have a logic and appeal of their own, nevertheless, so here's #1, the rest to follow ...

The struggle of literature is in fact a struggle to escape from the confines of language; it stretches out from the utmost limits of what can be said; what stirs literature is the call and attraction of what is not in the dictionary. Italo Calvino, The Uses of Literature

LECTURE ON NOTHING
I am here
and there is nothing to say
If among you are
those who wish to get somewhere
let them leave at
any moment
What we re-quire
is ; : ;
silence
but what silence requires
is
that I go on talking
Give any one thought
a push
it falls down easily
but the pusher
and the pushed
pro-duce
that enter-
tainment
called
a dis-cussion
Shall we have one later?
TIP
we could simply de-cide
not to have a dis-
What ever you like.
But
there are silences
and the
Or cussion now words silences
make
help make
the
I have nothing to say
and that is
poetry
and I am saying it
as I need it
is organized
This space of time
We need not fear these
silences,
